Usual suspects looking for first victory

Robin Miller PIKES PEAK, COL. -- Going into Sunday's show at Pikes Peak International Speedway, the Indy Racing League is batting 1.000 for 2003: five races and five different drivers in Victory Lane.

But, surprisingly, Kenny Brack, Tomas Scheckter, Helio Castroneves and Sam Hornish Jr. aren't among those winners.

Brack, back in the all-oval series he captured in 1998 following three years in CART, finished second at Japan but has yet to flash the form expected from Team Rahal.

"It's been a bit of a struggle because we're still learning the engines and chassis," said the 36-year-old Swede who dominated CART's ovals in 2001 with engineer Don Halliday and Bobby Rahal's crew. "We ran pretty week at Texas, and I think we'll run well this weekend.

"But it's tough. There were seven or eight guys who could win when I left the IRL and now there's 15 or 16."

Scheckter led the most laps last month at the Indianapolis 500 and was the class of the field last Saturday night at Texas but is still searching for his initial win with Chip Ganassi's team.

"I'm sick of dominating races and not getting the win," said the 22-year-old South African. "It's frustrating because we should have at least two wins.

"But we've had one of the fastest cars all season, and I'm sure our luck will turn around."

Castroneves had the strongest car at Indy, but his three-peat was spoiled by traffic and he wound up second to teammate Gil de Ferran. Although both Team Penske drivers struggled last weekend, both ran well here a year ago.

"Gil won the race, and I had a great battle with Sam (Hornish) so we've got a good setup and let's go get our first win of 2003," said Castroneves, a three-time winner in 2002 and runner-up in the points.

Hornish is strapped with the uncompetitive Chevrolet engine, and the two-time IRL champion has yet to lead a lap in 2003. But he's still pushing hard and hopes this track affords him a chance to rejoin the front of the pack.

"It's the fastest 1-mile oval we run on, but it's a handling track and a great driver's track," said Hornish, who finished one lap behind the Toyota and Honda teams at Texas in 11th place. "When you get your setup right, it's awesome and Helio (Castroneves) and I ran side-by-side the whole way around last year.

"We're working with a disadvantage, but there's nothing we can do right now except keep running as hard as possible."

Despite Toyota teams owning four of the five victories, Tony Kanaan and Honda are atop the point standings. A win at Phoenix, second at Texas and third at Indy have the 27-year-old Brazilian 26 points ahead of veteran Al Unser Jr.

"I've never seen the track before so I'll watch a tape of last year's race and go from there," said Kanaan, who didn't miss any action despite breaking his left arm at Japan. "If we can't win, we'll ge as many points as we can."

This weekend marks the return of Kanaan's teammate, Dario Franchitti, out since April after breaking his back in a motorcycle accident.

"I'm tired of watching, that's for sure, but I feel good and to say I'm anxious to get back is an understatement," said Franchitti, who missed three races while healing.
