Anthony Foyt to team with Dare
By Jack Arute

Jack Arute Super Tex has waited a long time for this moment.

Ever since A.J. Foyt stepped out of an Indy Car for the last time, he has searched for another driver who had the same verve and take-no-prisoners attitude that marked his career. It looks like he's found one -- and his name is also A.J. Foyt.

Foyt announced that his grandson, Anthony "A.J. IV" Foyt, would team with Airton Dare next season in the Indy Racing League.

"We're in no hurry this first year," the elder Foyt said. "We're going to do the best we can. Airton is not that old either, so if you take the three drivers I have between A.J., Airton and Larry (who races in the NASCAR Busch Series), I think their age averages something like 22 years old, so I've got three pretty young boys right now."

Foyt also campaigns a Winston Cup car, currently driven by 43-year-old Mike Wallace.

Foyt admits his racing has been less rewarding lately. Part of the problem has been his search for a "racer."

"I've had a lot of drivers in my cars," the four-time Indianapolis 500 winner said. "Now, I've got racers."

Dare and A.J. IV will be excellent teammates. Besides the age similarity, they have developed a friendship that saw each working for the other last season. When Dare won his first career IRL race, Anthony was changing the Brazilian's right front tire -- Foyt's job all season.

As A.J. IV drove to the first Infiniti Pro Series title, Dare handled spotting chores for the teen.

"I think he had a better season than I did," Dare laughed. "He's always giving me advice."

Anthony and A.J. Foyt
A.J. Foyt IV, left, won the Infiniti Pro Series title in 2002.

"He (Dare) always helped me on my line and helped me on different things to look for and to be patient with the car and stuff like that," Anthony Foyt said. "Even though we weren't really teammates, he helped me a lot, so I figure we'll work really well together next year when we are teammates."

Make no mistake, A.J. Foyt Enterprises is about to become all about Foyt -- A.J. and A.J. IV.

"The biggest thing that I want him to do is actually try to learn everything he can. We want to win if he can," Foyt said. "We want him to just run and try to stay out of trouble, and run hard and run smooth. So far, he's lived up to everything we have asked him to do."

The resemblance between Foyt the elder and Foyt the younger is uncanny. Long time Indy car followers marvel at how much A.J. IV looks like his grandad did when he was 19. But there is one difference. Foyt Jr. -- the Sr. is reserved for A.J.'s father, the late Tony Foyt -- is far more demonstrative than his grandson.

While A.J. Foyt would just as quickly settle an on-track argument with a wrench back in the pits, Anthony Foyt is soft spoken and lets his driving do his talking.

So what does A.J. Foyt, father, grandfather and retired racer think about his family following his career path? How does he think he will deal with the injury possibilities?

"It's always on your mind. You're just always nervous," Foyt said. "Every lap, you're glad to see them complete that lap, and when you're on a big track and the yellow goes on, you're waiting for that word, 'We're all right,' or if you know they crashed, you're on the radio. As long as you can hear them talk, it's fine, but when they have a crash and you don't hear anything back, then everything runs through your mind."
