FORT WORTH, Texas -- Gil de Ferran, in contention for the Indy Racing League season title, was released from the hospital Monday but won't be allowed to race in the season finale.

De Ferran suffered a concussion and fracturing his left wrist when he crashed into the wall on the 52nd of 200 laps Sunday in the Delphi Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway.

Because of the injuries, IRL director of medical services Dr. Henry Bock said de Ferran won't be allowed to participate in the Chevy 500 on Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway.

''Recovery periods for any type of concussion vary for many reasons, but rarely do symptoms completely disappear in 7-to-10 days,'' Bock said. ''As with any head injury, it is better to be cautious and not put the driver at risk. That's what were doing with Gil.''

De Ferran is one of just three drivers still mathematically eligible to win the $1 million season title. Defending champ Sam Hornish Jr. is the points leader after winning Sunday's race, 12 points ahead of Helio Castroneves and 38 ahead of de Ferran, the Malboro Team Penske teammates.

De Ferran won the last two CART season titles before Roger Penske moved his open-wheel team to the rival IRL this season.

After his crash Sunday, de Ferran was transported by helicopter to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, Ill. Wearing a splint for his injured wrist, he was released Monday.

Team Penske officials didn't return phone calls Monday night.
