Foyt crew leads list

Temperatures at Kansas Speedway hovered near triple digits. It was hot, on and off the track! So was the competition for this week's four stars.

A.J. Foyt Racing
Airton Dare
Dare
Airton Dare scored his first career win after passing Sam Hornish Jr. on the final restart of the race. It was quick thinking by Dare's spotter and A.J. Foyt that gave the young Brazilian the opportunity.

We talk a little bit to the spotter of the guys who are between the leader and second place or third," explained Airton after his win. "You try to stay out of the way because you are not in a fight for the race, and they did a great job, Raul (Boesel) and I don't remember who else was there, (George) Mack, they got out of the way and let me go by."

Dare's win completed a "double" for Foyt. Earlier in the day he watched his 18 year old grandson, A.J. Foyt IV win the first Infiniti Pro Series race after winning the pole.

"After Anthony won he asked me , "Pa-paw, do I have to work now?" recounted a chuckling A.J. Foyt Jr. "I said, you're Airton's right front tire man aren't you?" Young Foyt changed Dare's right front, leaving his celebration for later.

Felipe Giaffone
Again, Giaffone and his Hollywood Mo Nunn team scored a top five finish. If his team hadn't as many time consuming gaffes during pit stops it's possible Giaffone would have been the one celebrating his first career win instead of fellow countryman Dare.

"We had a couple of problems there," Giaffone explained. "I think at one point the guys dropped the car a little bit too early. A week ago, we won the fastest pit stop, and now we were slow in the pits, so I still have to give some credit there.

"We're knocking the door; we just need to get a little bit lucky. We're there, so it's going to come."

Billy Boat
Billy Boat
Boat
"We had a good, competitive race car early in the race," said Boat after his 9th place finish." We fought a bit of a balance problem in traffic throughout the race, but we were able to run with the lead pack."

A late race fuel pressure problem robbed Boat's new Infiniti engine of some horsepower late in the race and the Curb Records pilot held on for the final laps.

Boat is ecstatic about the switch from Chevy to Infiniti. "The car has some real oomph coming out of the corners"

Limited finances preclude this team from enjoying testing opportunities. It's their biggest liability and most responsible for their not winning. "We have some things in the pipeline for next year that should let us test some" Boat said.

Tomas Scheckter
Fast, yet no finish. Each race, Scheckter reinforces his potential in qualifying and leading the race. Each time though all that potential vanishes short of the ultimate goal.

"We just can't seem to get a break. We had an unbelievable weekend with winning the pole and leading so many laps. It was a perfect race up to the last 10 laps," sighed Scheckter after a tire failed, putting him into the wall with just 10 laps left in the race.

"I had low tire pressure in the right rear. It deflated, and there was no way I could control the car."

The good news for Scheckter is that this disappointment came closer to the ultimate prize than previous ones.
