Thursday, September 4 Kvapil to start up front at RIR SportsTicker RICHMOND, Va. -- Travis Kvapil has the pole for Thursday night's NASCAR Craftsman Truck series Virginia Is For Lovers 200 at Richmond International Raceway after rain washed away qualifying on Thursday afternoon. Kvapil was awarded the pole by virtue of his lead and his team's lead in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points standings. Driving for the Motor Freight Chevrolet team, Kvapil also started from the top position in March at Darlington Raceway and in July at Gateway Speedway. He comes off his first career series victory two weeks ago at Bristol Motor Speedway. Brendan Gaughan, in a Dodge, has the second slot in the 36-truck field scheduled to race at 8 p.m. ET. However, there is a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms for Thursday night. The 200-lap event is scheduled to be televised live on Speed Channel. Gaughan is eight points behind Kvapil in the championship race with nine races remaining. Dodge driver Ted Musgrave is 71 points behind Kvapil. Musgrave was the only one to break 122 miles per hour earlier in the practice session. He turned a lap of 122.705 mph. Jon Wood, Bobby Hamilton, Robert Pressley, Gaughan and Ken Schrader topped the 121 mph mark. Defending race winner and Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart was 15th fastest in practice and will start 27th. Dennis Setzer, who is fourth in the standings, had a shot at the checkered flag last year before spinning after a late pit stop. Setzer finished third here in 1999 and 2001. Also, Winston Cup veteran Jimmy Spencer -- winner of two Busch Series races this year -- will make his first Truck series start in the Ultra Motorsports No. 2 Team formerly driven by Jason Leffler. Leffler resigned from the Jim Smith-owned team following the Bristol event to take a fulltime position in the Winston Cup circuit with the NetZero Pontiac team. |
