Waltrip to race again in Martinsville
Associated Press

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Three-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion Darrell Waltrip, who retired as a driver two years ago, will get back behind the wheel for a truck race April 13 at Martinsville Speedway.

Waltrip, now an analyst for FOX television, will be reunited with former crew chief and current broadcast partner Jeff Hammond for the Advance Auto Parts 250 Craftsman Truck Series on the .526-mile oval.

"This is going to be fun," Waltrip said Tuesday.

Waltrip will drive a Dodge co-owned by Lynchburg, Va., businessman Jim Harris and Winston Cup team owner Mark Melling. The truck will be sponsored by Duck Head Footwear and will feature Waltrip's old No. 17.

Stacy Compton, a Winston Cup driver, was originally scheduled in the truck but was forced out by a scheduling conflict.

Waltrip earned 11 of his 84 career Winston Cup victories at Martinsville, and finished fifth in a truck race at the track in 1996.

"It definitely will rekindle some great memories we had together and give us another chance to make some new ones," Hammond said.
