Check out a short list of favorites for Saturday's Kroger 200 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway:
David Green:
The 1994 Busch Series champion stumbled on the final
lap of the TrimSpa 250 at Pikes Peak by spinning and finishing
12th; he fell two points behind leader Scott Riggs with 13 races
left; went winless since 1996 until April 12 at Nashville; also
won at Loudon two weeks ago; tops the circuit with 13 top 10 finishes;
started from the pole twice this year and has recorded eight top-fives.
Bobby Hamilton Jr.:
After bumping Mike Bliss at Loudon, Hamilton was
on the receiving end at Pikes Peak on Saturday and needed repairs in
the garage before returning for a 25th place finish; remained sixth
in the standings, but is 205 points out of first place; winner of two
impressive races this year at Chicagoland and Kentucky Speedway; in
Chicago, led all but 14 of 200 laps to win a lopsided race by more
than four seconds over Matt Kenseth; placed in the top 10 in 10 of
his last 14 races.
Ron Hornaday:
Finished in the first eight in five of the last
six races, including the seventh at Pikes Peak where he led
three different times for most laps (80); fourth in the standings,
50 points out of first; owns five top-five finishes and 11 top-10s
this year; sole victory this season came in a solid performance at
Nazareth on May 18, when he led 148 of 200 laps; was fourth in
this race last year; two-time Craftsman Truck series champion;
also tops that circuit with 26 victories.
Jason Keller:
Started at Pikes Peak at the end of the grid after
changing engines prior to the race; raced back to contention and
managed to lead 43 laps before losing position to eventual winner
Scott Wimmer; 50 points behind leader Scott Riggs in the standings;
has one win, a pole and 11 top-10s; started and finished second in
this race last year; won the event in 1995 and 1999; had a victory
at The Milwaukee Mile this year to bring his career total to 10;
one of five drivers with 300 or more career Busch Series starts,
joining Tommy Houston, Elton Sawyer, Randy LaJoie and Dale
Jarrett; tops the all-time money list with over $6.9 million;
finished in the top three in points in each of the past three
seasons.
Scott Riggs:
Regained points lead from David Green after just
one race with a third-place result at Pikes Peak that moved him
two points ahead of Green; one of three Busch Series regulars
with two victories this season (Green, Hamilton Jr.); won at
Gateway and Nashville, giving him four career wins in two years;
placed 11th here last season.
Johnny Sauter:
Highest finishing rookie in this race last year,
fourth place; also finish fourth at the TrimSpa 250 in Colorado
last week; improved one spot to eighth in the points, but a
distant 337 behind leader Riggs; scored 10 top-10s in 21 races
this year and also has been among the first five finishers four
times.
Brian Vickers:
Victim of circumstance on lap 29 accident at Pikes
Peak as he ran out of room and hit Larry Gunselman; was his first
finish outside the top 10 in last eight races; fell two spots to
fifth in standings, 124 points behind Riggs; owns six top-five
finishes this season, but still seeks first career victory in
series; enjoying an impressive campaign, with 10 top-10 finishes;
best showing was runner-up at the GNC 250 in Milwaukee; World
Karting Association national champion from 1994-97.
Scott Wimmer:
Led final 23 laps to win Pikes Peak race for his
first win of the year and fifth of his career; last win came at
season-ending Miami event; finished no lower than 19th in last
12 starts, including five top-10s; placed fifth at Loudon,
Richmond and Kentucky; solid run in this event last year, finishing
third after 32nd start; seventh in the points standings.
