Saturday, March 10 Updated: March 13, 2:35 PM ET Official announcement expected soon By Robin Miller Special to ESPN.com MONTERREY, Mexico -- The final details among his sponsors are being worked out here this weekend at the CART opener, but Michael Andretti's entry for the 2001 Indianapolis 500 will be official this week. As first reported on ESPN.com and RPM2Night last month, Andretti will drive a Dallara/Oldsmobile owned by Pennzoil Panther Racing, a regular in the all-oval Indy Racing League. CART's winningest driver is expected to be backed by Motorola, his sponsor in the FedEx Championship, and by Archipelago, a company which will be the first new U.S. stock exchange in 30 years that will be fully electronic. Archipelago will compete with NYSE, American Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Neither Andretti nor team owner Barry Green would confirm the deal but the latter did acknowledge it was being seriously discussed. "I said we wouldn't consider letting Michael go to Indy without the support of our sponsors and we're meeting with them this weekend," said Barry Green, who campaigns Paul Tracy, Dario Franchitti and Andretti in the CART series. "It's getting very late but, yes, I can say it's still a possibility." Andretti hasn't competed at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since the Indy Racing League/CART war broke out in 1996. The 38-year-old veteran has led 382 laps at the speedway but never made it to victory lane. Green, who hasn't been back to Indy since guiding Jacques Villeneuve to a win in 1995, is expected to provide some technical support and crew members for Andretti's effort. Last May, 1999 CART champ Juan Montoya led 167 of 200 laps to triumph in his rookie outing at Indianapolis. He won't be back but his former team, Target/Ganassi Racing, is returning with rookies Nicolas Minnasan and Bruno Junqueira along with 10-time Indy winner Team Penske and defending CART champ Gil de Ferran and teammate Helio Castroneves. Mauricio Gugelmin, who led a race-high 59 laps, also is scheduled to compete and Andretti's presence would give CART six regulars in the May classic. |
