Class 2003 Top 100 forward Marquis Kately of San Francisco-Riordan, Cal/Maine Central Institute, Maine, has been cleared by the NCAA to play at California this fall as a freshman. Kately committed to the Bears in the spring of 2002, but did not qualify academically and attended prep school.
Top 100 center Jackie Butler of McComb, Miss., a Class 2003 prospect from McComb, Miss., is expected to attend Laurinburg Institute, NC. He had chosen Mississippi State, but did not qualify.
Five players are considering transfering from Baylor after the school
imposed a two-year probation and a one-year ban on postseason play on its
men's basketball program after admitting to NCAA violations. The NCAA may
impose further penalties:
Lucas may consider Georgetown, Arkansas, Georgia and San Diego State. Roberts is visiting Mississippi State and Arizona. Nelson is interested in Georgia Tech and Memphis.
Baylor head coach Dave Bliss resigned after admitting to involvement in improper payments to players. Starting guard John Lucas III's father, John Lucas, the former Cleveland Cavaliers coach, was considered a potential candidate, but is no longer considering the position. Baylor president Robert Sloan said that any player who requests a release will be granted one. He also said the school would support a petition to the NCAA to waive the requirement that players sit out a year when transferring to another NCAA Division I school.
Fifty-six prospects on the early Class 2004 Top 100 have already made commitments.
