Obrzut joins Alleyne to give UK tremendous size

Class 2003 7-2 center Lukasz Obrzut of Poland/Bridgton Academy, Maine, has chosen Kentucky over East Carolina and Utah.

Obrzut had earlier decommitted from Fordham following the coaching change. Kentucky coach Tubby Smith recently added 7-3 center Shagari Alleyne of New York-Rice, NY.

Sophomore forward Ed Nelson of Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas, Fla., who is transfering from Georgia Tech, has chosen UConn over Boston College and UMass. He will redshirt next season.

Forward Romel Beck, a Class 2003 prospect from Rancho Cucamonga-Etiwanda, Cal/Fullerton CC, Cal/Los Angeles CC, Cal., has signed with UNLV over Wyoming and Fresno State. Auburn, Alabama and Illinois had also shown interest.

Sophomore forward Brian Thornton of Louisville-Manual, Kty., is transfering from Vanderbilt. He started 24 of 29 games during 2002-03, averaging 11.5 points and 5.7 rebounds.

George Mason has signed Class 2003 forward Kevin Mickens of Baltimore-Mt. St. Joseph's, Md/Allegany CC, Md.

Colorado State has a commitment from Class 2004 center Jason Smith of Kersey-Platte Valley, Colo., over Gonzaga. He also drew interest from Ball State, Marquette, Oregon, Purdue, Southern Illinois, Utah and Wyoming.

Wright State signed Class 2003 guard/forward Zakee Boyd of Newark, NJ/Philadelphia-Lutheran Christian Academy, Pa. He earlier decommitted from Hartford.

Cal-Northridge has Class 2003 forward Eto Onyengecha of Richmond-Kennedy, Cal/Contra Costa CC, Cal/CC of San Francisco, Cal.

Lamar added Class 2003 guard Raymond Anthony of Cowley CC, Kan.

Eastern Michigan has signed Class 2003 forward Emmanuel Amatosero of Erie CC, NY.

Manhattan added Class 2003 forward Guy Ngarndi of Cameroon/Louisville-Western, Kty.

Northeastern has signed Class 2003 guard Terry McVay of Connors CC, Okla.

Xavier pledged Class 2003 guard Stan Burrell of Indianapolis-Ben Davis, Ind. He is expected to first attend Hargrave MA, Va.

Eastern Kentucky has signed Class 2003 forward Julian Mascoll of Clearwater-Countyside, Fla.

New Orleans has signed two Class 2003 prospects in center Jacque Pate of Oxon Hill, Md/Northern Idaho CC, Idaho/Howard CC, Tex; and guard Lester McCalebb of New Orleans-Walker, La.

New Mexico State signed Class 2003 guard Detrius Roberson of Connors CC, Okla.

New Hampshire has signed Class 2003 forward Blagoj Janev of Sydney, Australia.

Florida Atlantic has signed three Class 2003 prospects, including forward Michael Bell of Raleigh-Enloe, NC/North Carolina State/Palm Beach CC, Fla; guard/forward Pierre Tucker of Baltimore-Dunbar, Md/Colby CC, Kan/Palm Beach CC, Fla; and guard Darren Dickerson of Wilmington-Laney, NC/Old Dominion/Southeastern Illinois CC, Ill.

Top 100 Class 2003 center Darryl Watkins of Paterson-Paterson Catholic, NJ., is near a decision between Rutgers, Syracuse and Seton Hall. North Carolina, Kentucky and Villanova had shown interest.

Class 2003 Top 100 forward Alexander Johnson of Albany-Dougherty, Ga/Bridgton Academy, Maine, is nearing a decision between Florida State, Cincinnati and UConn. He averaged 25 points and 13 rebounds last season.

Class 2003 Top 100 forward Mohamed Abukar of Escondido-Rancho Bernardo, Cal., is considering Kentucky and Florida. Abukar, who earlier decommitted from Georgia, had also considered Louisville, Missouri and UCLA, among others.

Arizona, Duke, Maryland, Illinois and Kansas lead the Early 2003 Top Classes.

2002 NBA Draft:
The NBA selected only one high school and a single junior college prospect: Center/forward Amare Stoudemire of Orlando-Cypress Creek, Fla., was taken 9th in the first round by Phoenix, while Portland took forward Qyntel Woods of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss., at No. 21 in the first round. The NBA passed on three other high school/prep school prospects and seven JC players (List).

2003 McDonald's All-American Game
LeBron James scored 27 points in leading the East over the West, 122-107, in the 26th annual McDonald's All-American high school basketball game in Cleveland, Ohio. McDonald's All-American Game stories/Rosters for 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000.
