Help on the way for Irish, Longhorns

Class 2003 guard Russell Carter of Paulsboro, NJ., has signed with Notre Dame. Carter, who also drew interest from Georgia, Penn State and William & Mary, averaged 30 points as a senior.

Highly-touted Class 2004 center/forward LaMarcus Aldridge of Dallas-Seagoville, Tex., has chosen the Texas Longhorns. Aldridge, considered a Top-5 prospect, also considered Oklahoma, Florida and North Carolina, among many others. He averaged 26.3 points, 13.5 rebounds, 5.4 blocks and 3.1 assists as a junior. Headed for an outstanding class, the Longhorns earlier gained top guard Daniel Gibson of Houston-Jones, Tex., and forward Dion Dowell of Texas City, Tex.

Virginia has gained Class 2003 forward Jason Cain of Philadelphia-John Bartram, Pa., over Villanova, Penn State and UNC-Greensboro.

Byron Joynes, a Class 2003 center/forward from Towson-Catholic, Md/Oak Hill Academy, Va., has chosen Rutgers.

West Virginia has a verbal from Class 2004 guard Darris Nichols of Radford, Va., over offers from Clemson, Virginia Tech, East Carolina and Richmond. He averaged 21.7 points as a junior.

Louisiana Tech has signed Class 2003 guard Donell Allick of Providence/Seward CC, Kan.

Manhattan gained Class 2003 forward Christano Johnson of Nassau, Bahmas/Laurinburg, NC.

Iona added Class 2003 forward Anthony Brown of Colonie, NY/Oakdale-St. Thomas More, Conn.

VMI signed three Class 2003 prospects in guard Matt Coward of Richmond-Hermitage, Va; forward Matt Murrer of Richmond-Benedictine, Va; and guard Fred Robinson of Washington, DC-Montrose Christian School.

George Washington signed Class 2003 center Jaaron Greene of Bristow, Va/Durham-Mt. Zion Christian Academy, NC., over interest from Georgetown. GW recently gained forward/guard J.R. Pinnock of Atlanta, Ga/Virginia Beach-Coastal Christian, Va., who had earlier decommitted from Wichita State.

Colorado State has a pledge from Class 2004 guard Sean Morris of Katy-Cinco Ranch, Tex. His father Chris starred at Auburn and in the NBA.

Central Florida has Class 2003 guard Kingsley Edwards of Monroe CC, NY.

Tulsa signed Class 2003 forward Guilherme Teichmann of Santa Cruz, Brazil/South Plains CC, Tex.

Portland signed Class 2003 guard/forward Devin Peal of Richmond-Kennedy, Cal.

Class 2003:


Over 900 Class 2003 prospects have made commitments or signed scholarship papers. Signings and commitments by conferences. The early period ran Nov. 13-20 and the late period is Apr. 16-May 15.

Arizona, Duke, Maryland, Illinois and Kansas lead the Early 2003 Top Classes.

Remaining uncommitted Top 100 Prospects (4): C-Darryl Watkins; F-Linas Kleiza; C-James Lang (Decommitted Louisville/possible NBA). F-Mohamed Abukar (Released by Georgia).

2002 NBA Draft:
The NBA selected only one high school and a single junior college prospect: Center/forward Amare Stoudemire of Orlando-Cypress Creek, Fla., was taken 9th in the first round by Phoenix, while Portland took forward Qyntel Woods of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss., at No. 21 in the first round. The NBA passed on three other high school/prep school prospects and seven JC players (List).

2003 McDonald's All-American Game
LeBron James scored 27 points in leading the East over the West, 122-107, in the 26th annual McDonald's All-American high school basketball game in Cleveland, Ohio. McDonald's All-American Game stories/Rosters for 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000.
