Top guard selects Texas

One of the nation's top Class 2004 guards, Daniel Gibson of Houston-Jones, Tex., has chosen Texas. Gibson, who has a 26-point scoring average, picked the Longhorns over Oklahoma and Kansas. Among many others were Arkansas and Georgia Tech.

Freshman forward Daryl Pegram of Los Angeles, Cal/Worcester Academy, Mass., is transferring from Indiana to Loyola-Marymont. He played in only two games for the Hoosiers and has undergone knee surgery.

Guard Antoine Agudio of Huntington-Walt Whitman, NY., pledged to Hofstra.

Daniel Ruffin, a guard from Peoria-Central, Ill., chose Bradley.

Class 2004 center Steven Hill of Branson, Mo., committed to Arkansas over Kansas and Missouri.

Center Jabbar Young of Fort Washington-National Christian Academy, Md., has enrolled and is practicing at San Diego State. He will begin play next fall.

Over 695 prospects have made commitments or signed scholarship papers. Signings and commitments by conferences. The early period ran Nov. 13-20 and the late period is Apr. 16-May 15.

Arizona, Duke, Maryland, Illinois and Kansas lead the Early 2003 Top Classes.

Remaining uncommitted Top 100 Prospects (4): C-James Lang (decomitted Louisville/possible NBA); C-Darryl Watkins; F-Linas Kleiza; G/F-LeBron James (probable NBA). Remaining committed/unsigned Top 100 Prospects (5): C-Shagari Alleyne (Rutgers); C-Jackie Butler (Mississippi State); C-Lamont Hamilton (St. John's); F-Marquis Kately (California); F-Charlie Villanueva (Illinois/possible NBA).

*The NBA selected only one high school and a single junior college prospect during the 2002 draft: Center/forward Amare Stoudemire of Orlando-Cypress Creek, Fla., was taken 9th in the first round by Phoenix, while Portland took forward Qyntel Woods of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss., at No. 21 in the first round. The NBA passed on three other high school/prep school prospects and seven JC players (List).
