Top QB pledges to South Carolina

Top 150 quarterback Syvelle Newton of Bennettsville-Marboro County, SC., committed to South Carolina over Clemson and Vanderbilt. The Gamecocks recently gained Ko Simpson, a defensive back from Rock Hill, SC.

Top 150 offensive lineman Mike Jones of Oak Lawn-Richards, Ill., is headed to the Iowa Hawkeyes over Notre Dame and Tennessee. He had also considered Penn State and Miami-Florida, among many others.

Jermaine Dias, a Top 150 linebacker from Hackensack, NJ., chose Virginia over North Carolina. Others were Boston College and Maryland. The Cavs also added Super Prospect defensive lineman/tight end Vincent Redd of Elizabethton, Tenn., who also considered Tennessee, Arkansas South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Super Prospect defensive lineman Tez Doolittle and Montavian Collier, both from Opelika, Ala., committed to Auburn. Also headed for the Tigers are defensive back Eric Brock of Alexander City-Russell, Ala; defensive lineman Quentin Groves of Greenville-Weston, Miss; and defensive lineman Marquies Gunn of Alexander City-Benjamin Russell, Ala., over Arkansas, Louisvile, UAB and Alabama.

Marcus Thomas, a Top 150 defensive lineman from Jacksonville-Mandarin, Fla., decommitted from Florida State to the Florida Gators. The Gators recently added defensive lineman Michael Hill of Smiths-Smiths Station, Ala., who decommitted from Alabama.

The early football signing period for mid-year qualifiers was Dec. 18-Jan 15. The spring period is Feb. 5-Apr. 1. Search the list of Prospects/Commitments/Signings/By Conference.

LSU, Southern California, Florida, Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas, Michigan, Notre Dame, Miami-Florida and North Carolina State lead the Early Top Classes.

Big Ten:
Defensive back Brandent Englemon of Covington-Holmes, Kty., pledged to Michigan after decommitting from Kentucky.

Michigan State pledged runnning back/linebacker Maurice Smith of Warren-Howland, Ohio. The Spartans recently gained receiver Jamar Jones of Arcadia-DeSoto, Fla; defensive back DeAndra Cobb of Antelope Valley CC, Cal; and defensive back Delton Ashburn of Newport News, Va/Fork Union MA, Va., who has decommitted from Syracuse. He earlier decommitted from Louisville.

Big 12:
Texas Tech has pledges from defensive linemen Chauncey Clark and Tommie Pratt, both from CC of San Francisco.

Baylor has pledges from running back Brandon Garrett of Hooks, Tex., and offensive lineman John Mahaffey of Tyler-Lee, Tex., who decommitted from Arizona. The Bears recently gained a pledge from 355-pound offensive lineman Chris Evans of Dallas-Carter, Tex.

Defensive back John Randle of Wichita-Southeast, Kan., and defensive lineman/linebacker Zach Mims of Kingwood, Tex/Hinds CC, Miss., picked Kansas. Randle picked the Jayhawks over Michigan State, Colorado, Missouri and Kansas State. Defensive lineman Michael Pruitt of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, Okla., recently decommitted from the Jayhawks to North Texas.

Big East:
Defensive back Marcus Clayton of Tallahassee-Godby, Fla., chose Syracuse over Louisville and Iowa. Also headed to Syracuse is offensive lineman Marvin McCall of St. Petersburg, Fla.

ACC:
Super Prospect defensive/offensive lineman Isaiah Thomas of Winston-Salem/Carver, NC., picked North Carolina over North Carolina State. Others were Tennessee, Wake Forest and Maryland.

Linebacker Anthony Kelly of Daytona Beach-Seabreeze, Fla., selected Florida State. He also considered UCF, East Carolina, Florida and USF.

SEC:
Arkansas has a pledge from punter Jacob Skinner of Texarkana, Tex.

Defensive lineman Phernando (Rex) Hill of Marathon, Fla., committed to Mississippi State. He also considered Florida State, Maryland and Mississippi. The Bulldogs also picked up linebacker Mike Heard of Lovejoy, Ga.

Linebacker Terrence Jones of Northport-Tuscaloosa County, Ala; offensive lineman Chris Capps of Fairburn-Landmark Christian, Ga., who decommitted from Oklahoma State; and linebacker Earnest Nance of Courtland, Ala., pledged to Alabama.

Receiver Bill Grimes of Douglasville-Chapel Hill, Ga; and defensive back Jon Hefney of Rock Hill, SC., picked Tennessee over South Carolina.

Conf-USA:
Memphis has pledges from linebacker Quintin Williams of Memphis-East, Tenn; defensive back Lee Hayes of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss; and defensive lineman Tyus Jackson of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss.

Tulane added linebacker Patrick Benford of Decatur-Southeast DeKalb, Ga.

Houston has pledges from running back/linebacker Wade Koehl of Midland, Tex., and receiver Perry McDaniel of Wolfforth-Frenship, Tex. The Cougars recently gained running back Anthony Aldridge of Denton, Tex., over Kansas, Iowa State, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

Running back Terry Arnold of Tallahassee-Lincoln, Fla., committed to Cincinnati over South Florida, North Carolina State, Indiana and Georgia Tech.

Louisville added defensive back Brandon Sharp of Jacksonville-Bolles, Fla., and offensive lineman Ryan Holifield of Jackson, Tenn/Fork Union MA, Va.

MAC:
Defensive lineman Marcus Hubbard of Sanford-Seminole, Fla., committed to Central Florida, who decommitted from South Florida.

Pac-10:
Washington State pledged defensive back Hussain Abdullah of Pomona, Cal., over Arizona State, Kansas and Oregon.

Defensive lineman Emmanuel Awofadeju of Roswell, Ga., chose Stanford over Notre Dame, Maryland, Tulane and Virginia. The Cardinal recently gained one of the nation's top receiver prospects, Mark Bradford of Los Angeles-Fremont, Cal., over Southern California; and offensive/defensive lineman David Jackson of Norcross-Wesleyan, Ga.

The Arizona Wildcats pledged defensive lineman Ryan Kilpatrick of Fort Worth-All Saints Episcopal, Tex., who decommitted from TCU; defensive back/receiver Marcus Hollingsworth of San Diego-San Diego High, Cal., over Colorado and San Diego State; and defensive back Michael Beach of Los Angeles-Fremont, Cal., over Oregon State and Utah.
