Hurricanes, Gators receive commitments

Top 150 linebacker Tavares Gooden of Fort Lauderdale-St. Thomas Aquinas, Fla., has picked Miami-Florida over Ohio State, Oklahoma and LSU. Among many others were Tennessee and Kansas State.

One of the nation's top junior college defensive linemen, Eric Holcombe of Mobile, Ala/Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss., picked Florida over Auburn, LSU and Mississippi. The Gators also have verbals from offensive linemen Billy Griffin of Ventura CC, Cal; Tavares Washington of Mississippi Delta CC, Miss., over Memphis, Mississippi and Mississippi State; and Anthony Guerrero of Cerritos CC, Cal., over Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa State and Arizona.

Top 150 defensive back/receiver Ryan Mundy of Pittsburgh-Woodland Hills, Pa., is expected to announce on Wednesday (Dec. 18) between Pittsburgh, Michigan and Virginia. He has eliminated Penn State and North Carolina State.

Sean Bailey, a Top 150 receiver from Alpharetta-Milton, Ga., is expected to announce on Wednesday (Dec. 18) between Georgia and Florida State.

Top 150 defensive lineman Doug Van Dyke of Marshall, Mich., is expected to announce on Thursday (Dec. 19) between Michigan and Purdue. Others were Wisconsin, Ohio State, Nebraska and Michigan State.

The early football signing period for mid-year qualifiers is Dec. 18-Jan 15. The spring period is Feb. 5-Apr. 1.

Oklahoma, LSU, Texas A&M, Texas, Notre Dame and Georgia head the Early Top Classes. Commitments by conferences.

Big Ten:
The Iowa Hawkeyes gained a commitment from defensive lineman Bryan Mattison of Mishawaka-Penn, Ind., over Colorado. His father is Notre Dame assistant coach Greg Mattison. Also headed for Iowa is defensive back Chris Brevi of Seffner-Armwood, Fla., over Memphis, Pittsburgh and South Florida. The Hawkeyes recently added defensive lineman Kenneth Iwebema of Arlington-Bowie, Tex., over Colorado State, Kansas State and Vanderbilt.

Northwestern has offensive lineman Trevor Rees of Pearland, Tex., over interest from Clemson and Pittsburgh. The Wildcats recently gained pledges from defensive lineman David Ngene of Humble, Tex., and receiver Aaron Burdex of Chickasha, Okla.

The Wisconsin Badgers added offensive lineman Marcus Coleman of Plymouth-Wayzata, Minn., over Illinois and Iowa. The Badgers recently gained offensive lineman Luke Knauf of Stratford, Wis., over Iowa; defensive lineman/linebacker Jamal Cooper of St. Louis-Hazelwood East, Mo., over UCLA, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas State; and receiver Brandon Tobias of Harvey-Thornton Township, Ill.

Huge 350-pound offensive lineman Kenyon Buford of Murfreesboro-Riverdale, Tenn., denies reports of a commitment to Ohio State Buckeyes. He is also considering Auburn, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest.

Big 12:
Linebacker Ron Prelow of Tampa-Jefferson, Fla., committed to Iowa State. The Cyclones recently gained linebacker Steve Allen of Delray Beach-Atlantic, Fla., over Kansas State, Iowa, East Carolina, South Florida and Toledo.

Kansas has verbals from defensive lineman Rashaad Norwood of Kansas City-Schlagle, Kan., over Kansas State; receiver/tight end Lyonel Anderson of Alfred State CC, NY; plus offensive lineman Joe Vaughn and defensive back Brandon Johnson, both from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M CC, Okla. The Jayhawks recently gained offensive lineman Johnny Urrutia of Pico Rivera-El Rancho, Cal/Mt. San Antonio CC, Cal.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers pledged offensive lineman Darin Delone of Mt. San Antonio CC, Cal., over Mississippi State and Arizona State; and defensive back Michael Smith of Pima College, Ariz., over Arizona and Texas Tech.

Tight end David Weems of Conroe-Oak Ridge, Tex., is headed to Texas Tech over Arizona, Florida and Iowa State. The Red Raiders also have defensive back Ryan Phillips of Mt. San Antonio CC, Cal., and tight end Willie Metcalf of Pima College, Ariz., who originally chose Ohio State as a prep.

Missouri gained pledges from receiver Brad Ekwerekwu of Arlington, Tex., over Kansas State, Iowa, Georgia Tech and Northwestern; receiver Jason Ray of Broken Arrow, Okla., and offensive lineman Monte Wyrick of Texarkana, Ark.

Big East:
Rutgers has pledges from defensive back Marcus Mitchell of Milford Academy, Conn., and offensive lineman Clint Dato of LaHabra, Cal/Cerritos CC, Cal.

ACC:
Quarterback Patrick Carter of St. Petersburg-Lakewood, Fla., and offensive lineman Matt Rhodes of Angleton, Tex., committed to Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets recently gained Top 150 running back/athlete Rashaun Grant of Tampa-Jefferson, Fla., over Florida, Miami-Florida, North Carolina, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida State and Oklahoma, among many others; and defensive back Avery Roberson of Atlanta-Washington, Ga.

Duke has a commitment from defensive linemen Casey Camaro of Kingston-Wyoming Seminary, Pa., over Maryland and Syracuse; and Christopher Moore of Mendota Heights-St. Thomas Academy, Minn., over Northwestern. Iowa was also involved.

SEC:
Georgia pledged offensive lineman Carleton Medder of Cloermont-South Lake, Fla., over Florida, Florida State, North Carolina State and Tennessee.

Conf-USA:
TCU pledged quarterback Chad Huffman of Sugar Land-Elkins, Tex., over interest from New Mexico and Pittsburgh.

Houston gained receiver Bennie Swain of Houstn-Madison, Tex., who recently decommitted from Colorado.

Mountain West:
San Diego State pledged tight end Jeremy Justice of Apple Valley, Cal/Victor Valley CC, Cal., and offensive lineman Brandyn Dembrowski of Henderson-Green Valley, Nev.

Pac-10:
Arizona pledged defensive back Zeonte Sherman of St. Petersburg-Pinellas Park, Fla/Arizona Western CC, Ariz.

Washington pledged tight end Jon Lyon of Saddleback CC, Cal; linebacker Kyle Trew of Edmonds-Woodway, Wash., and offensive lineman Chad Macklin of Visalia-Golden West, Cal.

Defensive lineman Chadd Evans of Tulsa-Washington, Okla., decommitted from UCLA due to the recent coaching change.
