Jackets, Vols, Bulldogs receive top commitments

Top 150 running back/athlete Rashaun Grant of Tampa-Jefferson, Fla., has committed to Georgia Tech over Florida, Miami-Florida, North Carolina, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Auburn, Tennessee, Florida State and Oklahoma, among many others. The Yellow Jackets also pledged defensive back Avery Roberson of Atlanta-Washington, Ga., over Duke, Mississippi State, West Virginia and Indiana.

Tennessee has pledged Top 150 receiver Jayson Swain of Huntsville-Grissom, Ala., over Georgia and Michigan, among many others. Swain had 52 receptions for 743 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior. The Vols earlier gained verbals from offensive/defensive lineman Steven Jones of Brentwood, Tenn., over Florida State and South Carolina; and defensive back/receiver RoShaun Fellows of Warren, Ark., over Auburn, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Iowa and Mississippi.

Huge Top 150 offensive lineman Donovan Davis of Jackson-Callaway, Miss., committed to Mississippi State over Auburn, LSU, Tennessee and Georgia.

The early football signing period for mid-year qualifiers is Dec. 18-Jan 15. The spring period is Feb. 5-Apr. 1.

Oklahoma, LSU, Texas A&M, Texas, Notre Dame and Georgia head the Early Top Classes. Commitments by conferences.

Offensive lineman Luke Knauf of Stratford, Wis., over Iowa; defensive lineman/linebacker Jamal Cooper of St. Louis-Hazelwood East, Mo., over UCLA, Illinois, Missouri and Kansas State; and receiver Brandon Tobias of Harvey-Thornton Township, Ill., selected the Wisconsin Badgers.

Illinois has added linebacker James Stevenson of Franklinville-Delsea Regional, NJ., over Purdue, Iowa, Clemson, Indiana and Wisconsin; linebacker Joe Mele of Manasquan, NJ., over Rutgers; offensive back Brian Grzelakowski of Hinsdale-Hinsdale Central, Ill., over Northwestern; defensive lineman Kam Buckner of Chicago-Morgan Park, Ill., over Indiana, Northwestern, Miami-Ohio and Bowling Green; and defensive back Kevin Mitchell of Fort Wayne-Homestead, Ind., over Indiana.

The Iowa Hawkeyes gained a commitment from defensive lineman Kenneth Iwebema of Arlington-Bowie, Tex., over Colorado State, Kansas State and Vanderbilt.

Northwestern has pledges from defensive lineman David Ngene of Humble, Tex., and receiver Aaron Burdex of Chickasha, Okla.

Big 12:
The Nebraska Cornhuskers pledged offensive lineman Darin Delone of Mt. San Antonio CC, Cal., over Mississippi State and Arizona State.

Tight end David Weems of Conroe-Oak Ridge, Tex., is headed to Texas Tech over Arizona, Florida and Iowa State.

Offensive lineman Monte Wyrick of Texarkana, Ark., chose Missouri over Baylor and Houston.

Kansas State pledged defensive back Greg Gaskins of Manhattan, Kan., over Kansas, Boston College, Michigan State and Oklahoma State.

Linebacker Steve Allen of Delray Beach-Atlantic, Fla., committed to Iowa State over Kansas State, Iowa, East Carolina, South Florida and Toledo.

Texas A&M pledged defensive lineman Chris Harrington of Houston-St. Pius X, Tex., over LSU, Florida and Oklahoma.

Kansas has verbals from receiver/tight end Lyonel Anderson of Alfred State CC, NY; plus offensive lineman Joe Vaughn and defensive back Brandon Johnson, both from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M CC, Okla. The Jayhawks recently gained offensive lineman Johnny Urrutia of Pico Rivera-El Rancho, Cal/Mt. San Antonio CC, Cal.

Big East:
Pittsburgh pledged linebackers H.B. Blades of Plantation, Fla., over Iowa State, Michigan, USC, Virginia, Auburn and Kansas State; and Clint Session of Pompano Beach-Ely, Fla., over North Carolina, Iowa, Kansas State, Michigan State, Purdue, Rutgers, Ohio and Syracuse.

ACC:
Offensive lineman Donnie Woods of Tampa-Jefferson, Fla., picked Maryland. Woods, who tore an ACL in October, verballed to the Terps over North Carolina and Florida State, among many others.

Wake Forest pledged receiver Kevin Marion of St. Petersburg-Catholic, Fla.

Duke has a commitment from defensive lineman Christopher Moore of Mendota Heights-St. Thomas Academy, Minn., over Northwestern. Iowa was also involved.

SEC:
Florida has verbals from offensive linemen Tavares Washington of Mississippi Delta CC, Miss., over Memphis, Mississippi and Mississippi State; and Anthony Guerrero of Cerritos CC, Cal., over Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa State and Arizona.

Arkansas pledged defensive back Chris Houston of Austin-LBJ, Tex., over LSU and Georgia Tech; and punter Brandon Roberson of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss., over interest from Boston College, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and Memphis.

MAC:
Quarterback Andre Brown of Bloomington, Ill., and linebacker Bob McClearen of Wheaton-North, Ill., picked Northern Illinois. The Huskies recently gained defensive lineman Nick Sykes of Oak Lawn-Richards, Ill., over Cincinnati.

WAC:
SMU has a verbal from defensive lineman Lucky DeLay of Irving-MacArthur, Tex., over West Virginia, Arkansas, Louisiana Tech and Oklahoma State.

Mountain West:
Colorado State pledged linebacker John Nichols of Bellflower, Cal.

Pac-10:
Washington pledged linebacker Kyle Trew of Edmonds-Woodway, Wash., and offensive lineman Chad Macklin of Visalia-Golden West, Cal.

Arizona State gained verbals from linebacker Justin Burks of Cerritos CC, Cal., over Florida, Iowa State and North Carolina; and defensive back/linebacker Daniel Varvel of Bakersfield, Cal., over interest from UCLA and Fresno State.

California has a commitment from defensive lineman Ryan Riddle of El Camino CC, Cal.

Defensive lineman/tight end Aaron Johnson of Fairfield-Armijo, Cal., committed to Washington State over Washington.
