Balk commits to the Gamecocks

Top 100 forward Renaldo Balkman of Brandenton-The Pendleton School (IMG), Fla., has committed to South Carolina over interest from Florida State, South Florida, Miami-Florida, Boston College and Alabama. He averaged 23 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks last season.

Wake Forest has a commitment from one of the nation's top junior basketball prospects in forward Cameron Stanley of Raleigh-Millbrook, NC., over interest from Florida, North Carolina, Florida State, Virginia and North Carolina State. He averaged 19.2 points and 6.7 rebounds as a sophomore.

Highly-recruited forward Lorenzo Thompson of Chicago-Crane Tech, Ill., committed to DePaul over interest from Michigan, Cincinnati, Syracuse, Ohio State, Florida, Oregon and Wyoming. Michigan State and Illinois were also involved. He averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds as a junior. The Blue Demons recently gained guard Tyler Smith, a Top 100 prospect from Laurel, Md/Baltimore-Douglas, Md/Philadelphia-Lutheran Christian, Pa., over interest from Charlotte and Georgetown. Sophomore guard Imari Sawyer of Chicago-King, Ill., has transferred to Des Moines Area CC, Ia, and is likely headed to Iowa State.

Pittsburgh has a commitment from touted forward Dante Milligan of Pawling-Trinity Pawling, NY., over interest from West Virginia, Providence, Rutgers, Marquette and Georgetown.

Louisville, Maryland, Kansas, Arizona and Memphis lead the Early 2003 Top Classes.

Western Michigan has a commitment from guard Mike Jefferson of Kansas City-Westport, Mo., over Missouri-Kansas City and Liberty. He averaged 16 points as a junior.

Guard Montrell Crittendon of Newbern-Dyer County, Tenn., committed to Middle Tennessee State.

Forward Anthony Teaque of Bedord-Chanel, Ohio, picked Radford.

Holy Cross has a commitment from guard/forward Keith Simmons of Kingston, NY.

Cal Poly has a commitment from forward John Manley of Minnetonka, Minn.

Utah State pledged forward Michael Wilds of Los Angeles-Dorsey, Cal/Chipola CC, Fla.

Tennessee-Martin gained guard Justin Smith of Memphis, Tenn/Arkansas State/Southeast Missouri State/Chipola CC, Fla.

Lamar has a commitment from forward Paige Paulson of Custer, SD.
