Padgett, Wilkes pick the Jayhawks

Outstanding basketball prospects have chosen Kansas and Virginia, while the Michigan Wolverines gained a touted defensive lineman.

Two Top 100 prospects, center David Padgett of Reno, Nev., and guard Omar Wilkes of Los Angeles-Loyola, Cal., committed to Kansas and Coach Roy Williams. Padgett, who also considered Arizona and North Carolina, averaged 23 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks as a junior. Wilkes, the son of Jamal (Keith) Wilkes, who played at UCLA and for Golden State and the Los Angeles Lakers, picked Kansas over the Bruins and California.

Gary Forbes, a Top 100 forward/guard from Brooklyn-Bannaker Academy, NY., pledged to Virginia over Georgia Tech. Forbes, who averaged 25 points as a junior, also considered UConn, Cincinnati and Mississippi State, among others.

Memphis, Mississippi State, California, Louisville, Michigan State, Michigan, Florida, LSU, Illinois and Oklahoma lead the Early Top Classes.

Former North Carolina starting guard Brian Morrison of Redmond-Lake Washington, Wash., who had announced plans to transfer to UCLA and then Washington, now intends to enroll at UCLA.

Forward/center Diego Romero of Argentina/Lon Morris College, Tex., committed to Florida State over Indiana, Texas Tech and Kentucky.

Cal Poly has a pledge from forward Tyler McGinn of Gilbert-Mesquite, Ariz.

Loyola-Marymount pledged guard John Ziri of Tempe-Marcos DeNiza, Ariz.

University of San Diego has a pledge from guard Michael Hubbard Bellflower, Cal/Fullerton CC, Cal.

Forward Marcellus Sommerville of Peoria-Central, Ill/Iowa/Iowa Western CC, Ia., has verballed to Bradley. He redshirted as a freshman at Iowa last season.

Promising guard Wesley Washington of Santa Ana-Mater Dei, Cal., who had committed to California, will not sign during the early period. Now focusing on qualifying, he has interest in Oklahoma State, California and Minnesota, among others.

Iowa State has a pledge from guard Curtis Stinson of Bronx-Regional, NY/Winchendon School, Mass., over Drexel.

St. Bonaventure pledged forward/guard Dan Cage of Indianapolis-Bishop Chatard, Ind., over Furman, NC-Wilmington and Wright State.

St. John's pledged forward Anthony Ighodaro of Moberly Area CC, Mo., over interest from UNLV, Texas and Creighton.

Guards Marko Milailovic of Santa Monica CC, Cal., and Allan Purnell of Fullerton CC, Cal., verballed to Pacific.

Birmingham Southern pledged forward Rostislav Vergun of Weatherford CC, Tex., and center Augustinas Vitas of Oklaloosa-Walton CC, Fla.

Guard Will Whittington of Kingwood, Tex., has verballed to Marist.

Chattanooga has a commitment from forward Matt Malone of Greenville, Tenn.

Center Rudolph Mauricette of France/Three Rivers CC, Mo/Lee CC, Tex., verballed to UTEP.

Top News:
Top 150 defensive lineman/tight end Will Paul of Ballwin-Parkway West, Mo., has committed to the Michigan Wolverines. Among over 20 offers were UCLA, Oregon, Nebraska, Kansas State, Iowa State, Kansas, Missouri, LSU, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Iowa, Purdue, Indiana, Clemson and Georgia Tech.

The Oregon Ducks have added freshman running back Chris Vincent of Philadelphia-Neshaminy, Pa/Valley Forge MA, Pa., who has transferred from LSU. He will redshirt this season and have four years remaining.

Auburn gained a commitment from defensive lineman Viciente DeLoach of Columbus, Miss., over offers from Florida, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

Defensive lineman Alex Willcox of West Des Moines-Valley, Ia., has chosen Iowa.

Defensive lineman/linebacker Mark Risher of Lafayette-St. Thomas More, La., has chosen Louisiana-Lafayette.
