Castille, McClain to Alabama

The Alabama Crimson Tide has commitments from two Top 150 running backs in Tim Castille of Birmingham-Briarwood Christian, Ala., and LeRon McClain of Northport-Tuscaloosa County, Ala.

The Tide also added defensive back Eric Gray of Trinity-West Morgan, Ala., over LSU, Mississippi, Auburn and Mississippi State. Castille chose Alabama over Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, Georgia Tech and Virginia. His father, Jeremiah, was an All-American defensive back at Alabama. McClain picked the Tide over LSU, Tennessee, Auburn, Mississippi, Memphis and Mississippi State.

Top 150 quarterback Todd Boeckman of St. Henry, Ohio, committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes over Maryland and Pittsburgh, among many others. He passed for over 1,700 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior.

Big East:
Defensive back Davonzo Tate of Austintown/Youngstown-Austintown Fitch, Ohio, has committed to West Virginia over an offer from Pittsburgh, plus interest from Maryland and Syracuse.

Boston College is expected to receive a commitment from offensive lineman Gosder Cherilus of Somerville, Mass., over Iowa. Among others were Michigan, Michigan State, Pittsburgh and South Carolina.

SEC:
Vanderbilt pledged quarterback Lance Parker of Bryant, Ark.

Conf-USA:
Offensive lineman Wade Sisk of Brenham, Texas, committed to TCU over an offer from Northwestern, plus interest from Arkansas, Texas A&M and Houston. .

Offensive lineman William Brown of Boonville-Starmount, N.C., committed to East Carolina. He also drew interest from North Carolina, North Carolina State and Virginia.

Pac-10:
Receiver Sean Young of Berkeley, Calif., has committed to California.

Class 2004 forward Cedric Simmons of Shallotte-West Brunswick, N.C., committed to North Carolina State over interest from Wake Forest, North Carolina, UConn, UNC-Wilmington, Clemson and Maryland, among others.

Tulane pledged guard Chris Moore of McKinnley, Texas/Maine Central Institute, Maine.

Class 2004 guard Miles Webb of Brooklyn Park-Park Center, Minn., committed to Minnesota. The Gophers recently gained Class 2004 forward/center Spencer Tollackson of Chaska, Minn.

Ninety-six prospects verballed or signed from the Class 2002 Top 100 List. Uncommitted Top 100 prospects (4): Forward Leonard Cooke of Old Tappan-Northern Valley Regional, N.J. (NBA, not drafted); center/forward Amare Stoudemire of Orlando-Cypress Creek, Fla. (NBA, first round to Phoenix); forward/center DeAngelo Collins of Inglewood, Calif. (NBA, not drafted); and center Sani Ibrahim of Oak Hill Academy, Va. (Junior College).

Final team selections made for 2002 USA Men's Junior National Team (Story).

Duke-bound J.J. Redick led the East past West, 138-107, in the 2002 McDonald's All American Game at Madison Square Garden in New York. (Stories/Rosters for 2002, 2001, 2000).

The NBA selected only one high school and a single junior college prospect during the 2002 draft: Center/forward Amare Stoudemire of Orlando-Cypress Creek, Fla., was taken 9th in the first round by Phoenix, while Portland took forward Qyntel Woods of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss., at No. 21 in the first round. Sending a message to inexperienced hopefuls, the NBA passed on three other high school/prep school prospects: forward Leonard Cooke of Old Tappan-Northern Valley Regional, N.J.; forward/center DeAngelo Collins of Inglewood, Calif.; and center Giedrius Rinkevicius of Lithuania/Bridgton Academy, Maine. Forward Brandon Roy of Seattle-Garfield, Wash., who signed with Washington, earlier withdrew his name from the draft. Last season, five of the six high school players who declared for the draft were selected, with Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry and DeSagana Diop being taken among the first eight picks. None made an impact during their rookie season.
