The Texas Longhorns have a pledge from Top 150 receiver/defensive back Jimmy Sutton of Boca Raton, Fla., over Oklahoma, Ohio State, Michigan and North Carolina State, among many others. The Longhorns recently gained a pledge from one of the nation's top running backs in Erik Hardeman of Pflugerville, Texas. Among many other offers were Miami, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, UCLA, Arkansas, LSU, Colorado, Nebraska and Michigan.

Florida State committed touted kicker Chase Goggans of Douglas-Coffee County, Ga., over Georgia, Michigan, Texas and East Carolina.

The LSU Tigers have commitments from outstanding defensive lineman Jaarod Carter of River Ridge-John Curtis, La., over Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Colorado, USC, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, West Virginia, Indiana, Baylor and Georgia Tech, among others; and running back Brandon Jacobs of Napoleonville-Assumption, La./Coffeyville CC, Kan., who originally signed with Auburn as a prep.

Big East:
Receiver/running back Orlando Kane of Lawrence, N.J., is headed to Rutgers over UConn.

Running back Joey Razzano of Milford, Ohio, is expected to chose Virginia Tech over Boston College, Kansas, Michigan State, Indiana and Mississippi. The Hokies recently gained receiver Josh Hyman of Chesapeake-Deep Creek, Va./Fork Union MA, Va., over Syracuse.

The NBA selected only one high school and a single junior college prospect during the 2002 draft: Center/forward Amare Stoudemire of Orlando-Cypress Creek, Fla., was taken 9th in the first round by Phoenix, while Portland took forward Qyntel Woods of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss., at No. 21 in the first round. Sending a message to inexperienced hopefuls, the NBA passed on three other high school/prep school prospects: forward Leonard Cooke of Old Tappan-Northern Valley Regional, N.J.; forward/center DeAngelo Collins of Inglewood, Calif.; and center Giedrius Rinkevicius of Lithuania/Bridgton Academy, Maine. Forward Brandon Roy of Seattle-Garfield, Wash., who signed with Washington, earlier withdrew his name from the draft.
