Stone to N.C. State; McCabe to Virginia

Top 150 quarterback Marcus Stone of Harrisburg-Bishop McDevitt, Pa., has committed to North Carolina State over 40 offers, headed by Tennessee, Michigan, Maryland and Notre Dame.

Virginia has gained a commitment from outstanding quarterback Kevin McCabe of Wexford/Pine-Richland, Pa., over Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State, LSU and Georgia Tech, among many others.

Touted defensive lineman Jason Jack of Humble, Texas, has picked Texas A&M over Nebraska, Oklahoma, Miami and Arizona. The Aggies also have a commitment from running back Chris Alexander of Humble, Texas, over Arizona and Arkansas. Outstanding defensive lineman/linebacker Ta Ta Thompson of Garland, Texas, recently chose the Aggies over Texas and Arizona State. Among others were Colorado, Oklahoma, UCLA and West Virginia.

The Maryland Terps verballed linebacker Tim Cesa of Kennesaw-Harrison, Ga., over Boston College, Notre Dame, Penn State and Vanderbilt.

Defensive lineman Joel Stubblefield of Anderson-Pendleton Heights, Ind., pledged to Indiana over interest from Purdue, Michigan, Michigan State and Illinois.

Michigan State gained defensive lineman Derrick Outlaw of Cassopolis-Ross Beatty, Mich.

The Clemson Tigers have a pledge from quarterback/defensive back C.J. Gaddis of Raeford-Hoke County, N.C., over 17 offers, headed by Georgia, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina State, North Carolina, Colorado, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

Oregon pledged linebacker Dante Rosario of Dayton, Ore.

Offensive lineman Travis West of Laurel-Northeast Jones, Miss., has picked Alabama over Mississippi, Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi, West Virginia and Marshall.

The Missouri Tigers have a pledge from offensive/defensive lineman Adam Spieker of Webb City, Mo.

Tulane gained offensive lineman Chris Bordelon of Alexandria-Bolton, La.

Top News:
Outstanding forward Brian Randle of Peoria-Notre Dame, Ill., has become the third Top 100 commitment for Illinois. Randle picked the Illini over Notre Dame, Kansas, Michigan and Indiana. Illinois earlier gained guard Richard McBride of Springfield-Lanphier, Ill., and forward Warren Carter of Dallas-Lake Highlands, Texas.

Center Tyler Hughes of Olathe-North, Kan., has given a commitment to Kansas State over Creighton, Wichita State and Missouri-Kansas City.

Guard Tron Smith of Moreno Valley-Canyon Springs, Calif., has confirmed a commitment to Arizona State.

Junior guard Emonte Jernigan of Richmond-El Cerrito, Calif./Santa Rose CC, Calif./Oregon State, is headed to Ohio State and will be eligible this fall.

Forward Nick Stiggers of Van Nuys-Montclair Prep, Calif., is headed to the USC Trojans over interest from California, UCLA and Memphis.

Guard Mike Green of Corvallis-Crescent Valley, Ore., committed to Portland.

Class 2002:
Duke-bound J.J. Redick led the East past West, 138-107, in the 2002 McDonald's All American Game at Madison Square Garden in New York. (Stories/Rosters for 2002, 2001, 2000).

Sixteen of the top men's basketball players 18-years-old or younger have been named finalists for 2002 USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team (Story).

Ninety-six prospects verballed or signed from the Class 2002 Top 100 List. Uncommitted Top 100 prospects (4): Forward Leonard Cooke of Old Tappan-Northern Valley Regional, N.J. (NBA, not drafted); center/forward Amare Stoudemire of Orlando-Cypress Creek, Fla. (NBA, taken 9th in the first round by Phoenix); forward/center DeAngelo Collins of Inglewood, Calif. (NBA, not drafted) and center Sani Ibrahim of Oak Hill Academy, Va. (Junior College).

NBA 2002 Draft:
The NBA selected only one high school and a single junior college prospect during the 2002 draft: Center/forward Amare Stoudemire of Orlando-Cypress Creek, Fla., was taken 9th in the first round by Phoenix, while Portland took forward Qyntel Woods of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss., at No. 21 in the first round. Sending a message to inexperienced hopefuls, the NBA passed on three other high school/prep school prospects: forward Leonard Cooke of Old Tappan-Northern Valley Regional, N.J.; forward/center DeAngelo Collins of Inglewood, Calif.; and center Giedrius Rinkevicius of Lithuania/Bridgton Academy, Maine. Forward Brandon Roy of Seattle-Garfield, Wash., who signed with Washington, earlier withdrew his name from the draft. He has not qualified for the Huskies. Seven junior college players who entered the draft were not chosen: forward Rodney Bias of Shelton State CC, Ala.; guard Cordell Billups of Pierce CC, Wash.; forward/center Lee Benson of Brown Mackie CC, Kan.; center Rashid Hardwick of Eastern Oklahoma State CC, Okla.; Kei Madison of Okaloosa-Walton CC, Fla.; guard Eddie Shelby of Dixie College, Utah; and forward Omar Weaver of Riverside CC, Calif. Last season, five of the six high school players who declared for the draft were selected, with Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry and DeSagana Diop being taken among the first eight picks. None made an impact during their rookie season.
