The early rush for football commitments gets into high gear, while Mississippi State has pledged one of the nation's top basketball forwards.
The LSU Tigers have a commitment from quarterback Matt Flynn of Tyler-Lee, Texas, over offers from Alabama, Colorado, Purdue, Arizona, Baylor, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt and Tulane. He passed for 1,650 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior.
California pledged quarterback Cary Dove of Woodland Hills-Taft, Calif., who passed for 3,400 yards and 29 touchdowns as a junior. The Bears recently gained receiver Sam DeSa of Danville-Monte Vista, Calif., who caught 65 passes for 1,210 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior.
Washington has a soft commitment from receiver/defensive back Corey Williams of Las Vegas, Nev., over Washington State, UNLV, Arizona and Oregon State.
Iowa State has pledges from quarterback Bret Meyer of Atlantic, Iowa; offensive lineman Tom Schmeling of Atlantic, Iowa; and quarterback Nate Mechaelsen of Blairsburg-Northeast Hamilton, Iowa. The Cyclones recently gained athlete Kurtis Taylor of Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Texas A&M has a commitment from tight end Joey Thomas of Austin-Westlake, Texas, over an offer from Missouri; and offensive lineman Kirk Elder of Spring-Klein Oak, Texas, over offers from Baylor, Mississippi, Syracuse, Texas Tech and Wisconsin.
Virginia Tech pledged defensive lineman Barry Booker of Amherst, Va., over interest from East Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.
Defensive lineman Terry Hunter of Wendell-East Wake, N.C., committed to North Carolina over North Carolina State, Tennessee, Georgia and Wake Forest.
Florida has added two seniors for the 2002 squad: offensive lineman Todd Bunce of Bradenton-Southeast, Fla., and defensive lineman MacKenzie Pierre of Miami-Booker T. Washington, Fla. Class 2003:

Sixteen of the top men's basketball players 18-years-old or younger have been named finalists for 2002 USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team (Story).

Eight junior college players opted for the draft: Forward Rodney Bias of Shelton State CC, Ala., once signed with Alabama; guard Cordell Billups of Pierce CC, Wash.; forward/center Lee Benson of Brown Mackie CC, Kan.; center Rashid Hardwick of Eastern Oklahoma State CC, Okla.; Kei Madison of Okaloosa-Walton CC, Fla., once linked to Indiana, Alabama and Mississippi State; guard Eddie Shelby of Dixie College, Utah; forward Omar Weaver of Riverside CC, Calif., once signed with Missouri and later committed to Fresno State; and Qyntel Woods of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss., once signed with Memphis.
Last season, six high school players declared for the draft, with Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry and DeSagana Diop being taken among the first eight picks. The 2002 draft will be held on June 26 and players without agents had until June 19 to withdraw. Stoudemire may be a late lottery pick, while Cooke and Collins are probable second-round choices. Rinkevicius is not expected to be drafted. Junior college prospects Woods and Benson may go in the first round.
