Washington, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia Tech head the latest football commitments, while Iowa, DePaul and Boston College snared cage prospects.
Touted receiver Bobby Whithorne of Santa Margarita-Catholic, Calif., has committed to the Washington Huskies. He had 50 receptions for 848 yards as a junior.
South Carolina has commitments from linebacker/defensive back Tray Rogers of Irmo, S.C., son of former NFL star George Rogers; and defensive lineman Darrell Shropshire of Kershaw-Andrew Jackson, S.C./Coffeyville CC, Kan., over an offer from Florida. The Gamecocks recently gained a pledge from linebacker Marcus Lawrence of Aiken-Silver Bluff, S.C./Butler County CC, Kan.
The Texas Longhorns pledged tight end Steven Hogan of Houston-Strake Jesuit, Texas, over Stanford. Among others were Florida, Boston College and Northwestern.
Virginia Tech has a commitment from quarterback Courtney Denson of Miami-Central, Fla., over interest from Auburn, Florida State, North Carolina State, Central Florida, Northwestern, Boston College and Rutgers, among others.
Running back Derrick Brown of Spring-Klein Oak, Texas, has decommitted from Texas A&M and will now consider the Aggies, Nebraska and Oklahoma.
Redshirt freshman receiver Michael Collins of Commerce, Ga., is transferring from Tennessee to Clemson.
Mississippi State has a soft commitment from linebacker/tight end Ken Griffith of Brandon, Miss., who will still look at Clemson and South Carolina, among others. Class 2003:

BASKETBALL Top News:
Sixteen of the top men's basketball players 18-years-old or younger have been named finalists for 2002 USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team (Story).
DePaul and new coach Dave Leitao signed forward Marlon Brumfield of Chicago-Collins, Ill., who averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds as a senior.
TCU has signed forward Chudi Chinweze of Missouri City-Hightower, Texas, over interest from Miami (Fla.), Oklahoma and Houston.
Forward Dan Coleman of Minneapolis-Minnetonka, Minn., has decided on Boston College over interest from Illinois, Marquette, Minnesota, Purdue, UNLV and Wisconsin.
Duquesne pledged forward Sean McKeon of Radnor-Archbishop Carroll, Pa., over LaSalle, William & Mary and Penn.
IUPUI has signed guard/forward Brandon Cole of Indianapolis-Ben Davis, Ind., and forward Fred Long of Indianapolis-Lawrence North, Ind./Parkland College, Ill.

NBA 2002 Draft:
Eight junior college players opted for the draft: Forward Rodney Bias of Shelton State CC, Ala., once signed with Alabama; guard Cordell Billups of Pierce CC, Wash.; forward/center Lee Benson of Brown Mackie CC, Kan.; center Rashid Hardwick of Eastern Oklahoma State CC, Okla.; Kei Madison of Okaloosa-Walton CC, Fla., once linked to Indiana, Alabama and Mississippi State; guard Eddie Shelby of Dixie College, Utah; forward Omar Weaver of Riverside CC, Calif., once signed with Missouri and later committed to Fresno State; and Qyntel Woods of Northeast Mississippi CC, Miss., once signed with Memphis.
Last season, six high school players declared for the draft, with Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry and DeSagana Diop being taken among the first eight picks. The 2002 draft will be held on June 26 and players without agents have until June 19 to withdraw. Stoudemire may be a late lottery pick, while Cooke and Collins are probable second-round choices. Roy and Rinkevicius are not expected to be drafted. Junior college prospects Woods and Benson may go in the first round.
