If you lived in Boston, you whooped and hollered as the Patriots won the Super Bowl, cheered the Bruins and Celtics in the playoffs, and ... well, at least the Red Sox won 93 games.
| |
| Like all sports fans in San Francisco, Terrell Owens had reason to cheer in 2002. |
If you lived in Chicago, you cried over the collapse of the Bears, moaned over the disappointments of the Cubs and White Sox, and cringed at the continued ineptitude of the Bulls.
So Page 2 had to know: Which city had the best year? We devised a scoring method, punched in the numbers and produced a winner. But first, how we tabulated the results:
1. We averaged the winning percentage for all teams in the four major sports for cities that have at least two franchises (thus, one-sport cities such as Green Bay, San Jose and Sacramento were not included).
2. We added bonus points on the following basis: 50 points for winning the championship, 25 points for reaching the title game and 10 points for making the playoffs.
3. We also felt individual accomplishments were important, so we added 20 points for having a league MVP, 5 points for each player who made the NBA All-Star Game, 4 points for making the NHL or MLB All-Star Game and 3 points if named to the 2003 Pro Bowl.
4. Oh, we also subtracted 10 points if a team finished in last place and subtracted 50 if the franchise relocated to another city (that's you, Charlotte).
Note: We used the 2002 Super Bowl result, but playoff teams from the 2002 season; NHL and NBA standings from the 2001-02 season.
The winner? Congrats, San Francisco.
