Elias won the first BASS tournament he entered: the 1979 Virginia Invitational on Lake Gaston. Three years later, he won the 1982 Bassmaster Classic on the Alabama River, when he helped launch the deep crankbait craze. He also won the 1988 Super Pro tournament on Lake Okeechobee - his lastest tournament victory.
