SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Milton Wynants of Uruguay won the final gold medal of the Pan American Games on Sunday, taking the men's 121-mile road cycling race in 4 hours, 32 minutes, 41 seconds. Cuba's Pablo Perez finished second, and Jose Medina of Chile took bronze. Both riders finished with the same time in searing heat. Colby Pearce of Boulder, Colo., was fifth in 4:33:22. Jamie Carney of Boulder, Colo., dropped out of the race after setting a fast early pace, trying to tire out the rest of the field for Pearce. "Considering I came here for track racing, I'm happy with this result," Pearce said. The top finishers broke away with 12 laps to go on the course through the streets of Santo Domingo. Nobody from the pack could close on them. The result of the final event of the games left the United States on top of the medals chart with 271, including 115 gold. Cuba finished second with 152, 72 of them gold. |
