BASEBALL
Perennial power Cuba won its opener 5-0 over Panama, limiting
the Panamanians to five hits. Then the Americans won their 24th
straight game, getting four runs in the opening inning and routing
the Bahamas 12-0. Tyler Greene (Plantation, Fla.) homered and
Michael Griffin (Cedar Hill, Texas) had three hits.
BASKETBALL
Andre Barrett's off-balance jumper at the buzzer rimmed out and
the U.S. men lost to Puerto Rico 86-85. Barrett, of Seton Hall, led
the Americans with 16 points and Arthur Johnson of Missouri had 15.
After dropping the opener to Cuba, the U.S. women rallied to
beat Canada 56-53. Stanford's Nicole Powell made a 3-pointer with
1:27 left to put the Americans ahead, and Tennessee's Loree Moore
stole the ball with 8 seconds left to seal the win.
BOWLING
Two-time U.S. champion Bill Hoffman and Scott Pohl rallied to
the gold medal. Down by 45 pins to Canada with two games remaining,
Hoffman and Pohl combined for 490 pints to move into the lead. They
closed with 425 to win with 5,020 for 12 games. Canada won the
silver, Colombia the bronze.
Hoffman finished with the highest individual average of 220.67.
American pair Shannon Pluhowsky, from Phoenix, and Stacy Werth,
Rocklin, Calif., took the silver in women's doubles with a 4,715
total score. Mexico's Adriana Perez Navarro and Illiana Lomeli
Lemus won the gold with 4,807. Pluhowsky and Werth were in fourth
after Saturday's games, but bowled more than 100 points better on
Sunday to jump two places.
FENCING
Mariana Gonzalez of Venezuela beat Erinn Smart of Brooklyn,
N.Y., 15-14, then took Emily Cross of New York 15-9 in women's
foil. Cross got silver and Smart earned bronze.
In men's epee, Camilo Boris of Cuba won the gold.
FIELD HOCKEY
The United States scored all five goals in the first half to
beat Jamaica 5-0. Jill Reeve (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) and Tracey Fuchs
(Centereach, N.Y.) each had two goals.
GYMNASTICS
Cuba's Eric Lopez took the all-around men's gold medal with
56.400 points. David Durante of Garwood, N.J., got the silver at
54.625. Lopez is the games' first double gold medalist, having won
the team competition on Saturday.
HANDBALL
Argentina beat the United States 28-19, dominating the second
half. Andres Kogosek led the winners with nine goals. Gary ``Hang
Time'' Hines (Mapleton, Ga.) scored six times on 10 shots for the
United States.
The U.S. women lost their second straight, but unlike in their
lopsided defeat against Brazil, they tested top-ranked Argentina
before falling 25-19. Edina Batar, who is from Budapest, Hungary,
led the Americans with six goals.
SHOOTING
Lance Bade of Vancouver, Wash., earned the gold medal in trap
shooting with only three misses in seven rounds. It was the third
straight Pan Ams in which he won gold.
The American women failed to medal or earn an Olympic berth in
air pistol.
VOLLEYBALL
The U.S. men eased past Barbados 25-15, 25-21, 25-15. Brazil
swept the U.S. women 30-28, 25-13, 25-18 in the opener for both
teams.
WATER POLO
A 13-0 run sparked the U.S. men past Brazil, 17-5. The Americans
have outscored two opponents 41-5. Tony Azevedo of Long Beach,
Calif., and Wolf Wigo of New York each scored four goals.
WRESTLING
Cuba swept all seven weight classes in Greco-Roman, with 2000
Olympic champion Rulon Gardner falling to heavweight Mijian Lopez
5-0 in the final. The United States took four silvers: Brandon
Paulson of Anoka, Minn.; Brad Vering of Colorado Springs, Colo.;
Justin Ruiz of Salt Lake City; and Gardner, of Afton, Wyo. The
bronze winners were James Gruenwald and T.C. Dantzler, both of
Colorado Springs.
The host Dominicans got a silver from Angelo Mota that was their
first medal of any kind in these games.
