Sunday: U.S. bowlers take gold medal

Associated Press

BASEBALL
Perennial power Cuba won its opener 5-0 over Panama, limiting the Panamanians to five hits. Then the Americans won their 24th straight game, getting four runs in the opening inning and routing the Bahamas 12-0. Tyler Greene (Plantation, Fla.) homered and Michael Griffin (Cedar Hill, Texas) had three hits.

BASKETBALL
Andre Barrett's off-balance jumper at the buzzer rimmed out and the U.S. men lost to Puerto Rico 86-85. Barrett, of Seton Hall, led the Americans with 16 points and Arthur Johnson of Missouri had 15.

After dropping the opener to Cuba, the U.S. women rallied to beat Canada 56-53. Stanford's Nicole Powell made a 3-pointer with 1:27 left to put the Americans ahead, and Tennessee's Loree Moore stole the ball with 8 seconds left to seal the win.

BOWLING
Two-time U.S. champion Bill Hoffman and Scott Pohl rallied to the gold medal. Down by 45 pins to Canada with two games remaining, Hoffman and Pohl combined for 490 pints to move into the lead. They closed with 425 to win with 5,020 for 12 games. Canada won the silver, Colombia the bronze.

Hoffman finished with the highest individual average of 220.67.

American pair Shannon Pluhowsky, from Phoenix, and Stacy Werth, Rocklin, Calif., took the silver in women's doubles with a 4,715 total score. Mexico's Adriana Perez Navarro and Illiana Lomeli Lemus won the gold with 4,807. Pluhowsky and Werth were in fourth after Saturday's games, but bowled more than 100 points better on Sunday to jump two places.

FENCING
Mariana Gonzalez of Venezuela beat Erinn Smart of Brooklyn, N.Y., 15-14, then took Emily Cross of New York 15-9 in women's foil. Cross got silver and Smart earned bronze.

In men's epee, Camilo Boris of Cuba won the gold.

FIELD HOCKEY
The United States scored all five goals in the first half to beat Jamaica 5-0. Jill Reeve (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) and Tracey Fuchs (Centereach, N.Y.) each had two goals.

GYMNASTICS
Cuba's Eric Lopez took the all-around men's gold medal with 56.400 points. David Durante of Garwood, N.J., got the silver at 54.625. Lopez is the games' first double gold medalist, having won the team competition on Saturday.

HANDBALL
Argentina beat the United States 28-19, dominating the second half. Andres Kogosek led the winners with nine goals. Gary ``Hang Time'' Hines (Mapleton, Ga.) scored six times on 10 shots for the United States.

The U.S. women lost their second straight, but unlike in their lopsided defeat against Brazil, they tested top-ranked Argentina before falling 25-19. Edina Batar, who is from Budapest, Hungary, led the Americans with six goals.

SHOOTING
Lance Bade of Vancouver, Wash., earned the gold medal in trap shooting with only three misses in seven rounds. It was the third straight Pan Ams in which he won gold.

The American women failed to medal or earn an Olympic berth in air pistol.

VOLLEYBALL
The U.S. men eased past Barbados 25-15, 25-21, 25-15. Brazil swept the U.S. women 30-28, 25-13, 25-18 in the opener for both teams.

WATER POLO
A 13-0 run sparked the U.S. men past Brazil, 17-5. The Americans have outscored two opponents 41-5. Tony Azevedo of Long Beach, Calif., and Wolf Wigo of New York each scored four goals.

WRESTLING
Cuba swept all seven weight classes in Greco-Roman, with 2000 Olympic champion Rulon Gardner falling to heavweight Mijian Lopez 5-0 in the final. The United States took four silvers: Brandon Paulson of Anoka, Minn.; Brad Vering of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Justin Ruiz of Salt Lake City; and Gardner, of Afton, Wyo. The bronze winners were James Gruenwald and T.C. Dantzler, both of Colorado Springs.

The host Dominicans got a silver from Angelo Mota that was their first medal of any kind in these games.
