Close games the rule for Americans

Associated Press

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- There were no late heroics for the U.S. men's basketball team Sunday night at the Pan American Games.

Andre Barrett missed an off-balance jump shot at the buzzer as the Americans fell to Puerto Rico 86-85. The previous night, they rallied to beat Argentina 80-79.

"It was mainly to get me the ball and go off two screens and look for my options," Barrett said of the final sequence. "But they denied me the ball and then we were forced to give it to somebody else. By the time I was able to get the ball back, I just had enough time to get to the basket and that's about it."

He fell flat on his stomach after missing, and his teammates had to lift up the dejected Seton Hall guard before slowly accompanying him off the court.

The score was tied at 68-all at the start of the fourth quarter before Puerto Rico used a 13-4 run to open a lead it did not relinquish.

U.S. coach Tom Izzo of Michigan State thought the Puerto Ricans dictated the pace late in the game. The Americans also were hurt by turnovers.

Puerto Rico's Raymond Dalmau missed two free throws with the score 86-85. His team got the rebound of the second miss but lost it out of bounds.

The Americans struggled to find room to shoot, and Barrett saw his shot rim out.

Barrett led the Americans with 16 points, and Arthur Johnson of Missouri had 15. Puerto Rico was led by Carlos Arroyo with 24 points, and Sharif Fajardo added 19, all in the second half.

"I just wanted to be ready for my team," Fajardo said through an interpreter. "I trust myself. I know what I can do. I've been doing it for a long time."

Argentina fell to 0-2 in the Americans' group when poor foul shooting down the stretch hurt it once more in an 84-81 loss to Uruguay. The Argentines, expected to give the United States a strong test, also were weak from the free-throw line in losing to the Americans on Saturday.

The U.S. women needed to stop playing Cuba to get a win.

Georgetown's Rebekkah Brunson scored 12 points to lead the American basketball team past Canada 56-53 Sunday after the Americans had lost four straight games to the Cubans.

"Obviously, we're pleased to win," said American coach Debbie Ryan, the coach at Virginia. "We feel better, but it's not time to celebrate."

The U.S. team opened pool play Saturday, losing to Cuba 84-62. The Cubans also swept three exhibition games from the Americans in July in Havana. The Americans face regional powerhouse Brazil on Monday.

Canada led 52-51 with less than two minutes to go. Duke forward Iciss Tillis reached over an opponent to keep a rebound alive, leading to a held ball on which the Americans kept possession. Stanford's Nicole Powell then made a 3-pointer with 1:27 left to put Team USA ahead for good.

The Canadians had a chance to retake the lead in the waning moments, but Loree Moore stole the ball with 8 seconds left to seal the win.

"I saw my teammate get beat, and I jumped to the spot where I thought the ball would be," said Moore, who will be a junior at Tennessee. "I put my hand out, got a piece of the ball and came away with it. This win gives us more confidence. It was definitely a relief. We're all used to winning in all of our (college) programs, and we expect to win here."

Canada led 29-26 at halftime and was up four points at the end of the third quarter. The Americans rallied, outscoring the Canadians 16-9 in the fourth period to earn their first win of the competition.

Michelle Hendry led Canada with 21 points.

The Americans are in the middle of the pack in the six-team competition. Brazil and Cuba are undefeated (2-0), while the United States and Argentina are 1-1. Canada and the Dominican Republic are 0-2. After the round-robins, the top four teams advance to the medals round.

In other women's games Sunday, Brazil routed Argentina 86-43 and Cuba beat the Dominican Republic 82-55.
