OXFORD, Ohio -- Tragedy struck Ohio University's men's basketball program and the entire university community when Rachael Townsend, wife of assistant coach Brian Townsend, died Sunday after completing the Chicago marathon.

The 29-year old Townsend collapsed shortly after finishing the race. The Chicago Tribune reported that she was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m., 30 minutes after completing the race. An autopsy was performed, but cause of death hasn't been released.

Townsend was a field hockey player at Michigan where she met her husband, who was then the boys basketball coach at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor. Rachael went on to coach the girls soccer team at Saline High in Michigan before following her husband for his first Division I coaching job last spring. The couple had just moved into their new home in Athens, Ohio, and Rachael had started her job as a dance instructor at Ohio.

"She had such a vibrant personality," Ohio coach Tim O'Shea said. "We're all devastated."

Ohio assistant John Rhodes said in Rachael's short time on campus she had become a big sister to many of the players. A memorial service will be held in Ann Arbor. Townsend's funeral will be in her native British Columbia.
