SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- A sprained back kept Tracy McGrady from attending Monday night's game between the United States and Canada at the FIBA-Americas Olympic qualifying tournament.
McGrady, who sat out the second half of Saturday's game against the U.S. Virgin Islands because of the injury, is day-to-day. He had been bothered by the injury in his lower back for more than two years.
McGrady has been the U.S. team's leading scorer, averaging 14.5 points per game. He was replaced in the starting lineup by Vince Carter.
Team doctor Tony Daly described the injury as a sprain. McGrady did not accompany the team to Roberto Clemente Coliseum for the game.
"Our experiences are that it's manageable,'' Orlando Magic general manager John Gabriel said, "so we're not overly concerned.''
Gabriel said the Magic had no problem with McGrady returning to the U.S. team later this week if he feels healthy enough to play. The injury sidelined McGrady for seven games last season, when he led the NBA in scoring with an average of 32.1 points.
