Pfaff a specialist in sprint and field events

Reuters

PALO ALTO, Calif.-- Dan Pfaff, who coached Canada's Donovan Bailey to the 100-meter world record in 1996, is being considered as coach for current record holder Tim Montgomery and his partner, triple Olympic champion Marion Jones.

Although no contract has been signed, Pfaff, an assistant coach at the University of Texas, has been seen consulting with Montgomery at the U.S. championships, sources told Reuters.

Montgomery, who finished second in the 100 meters at the championships Friday after stumbling, has said he expects to have a coach within days.

The 49-year-old Pfaff is a specialist in both the sprints and field events, which would help Jones, who has said she would like to compete in both the long jump and sprints next year at the Athens Olympics.

Bailey set the then-world record of 9.84 seconds at the Atlanta Olympics. It has since been broken by first American Maurice Greene and then compatriot Montgomery, who clocked 9.78 seconds last September in Paris.

Jones and Montgomery are expecting their first child next month and she plans to resume serious training as soon as possible afterwards.

The couple have been looking for a coach since leaving long-time mentor Trevor Graham last autumn.

They consulted during the winter with banned Canadian coach Charlie Francis but left him after an international uproar.
