BRISBANE, Australia -- A swimming event between Australia and the United States in Indianapolis next month might be called off if a war with Iraq breaks out.
On Monday, high performance director Greg Hodge said he would meet with Olympic security advisers Thursday to discuss the issue. He also said Australian Swimming would take advice from the department of foreign affairs and trade.
''We've also had discussions with U.S. Swimming about this,'' Hodge said. ''We are conscious of the fact that if war breaks out there may be some implications for us.
''We'll take advice and we'll act responsibly on the basis of that advice.''
Members of the Australian team are scheduled to fly to Indianapolis after the national swimming championships next week in Sydney for the April 6 meet.
The meet involving the two top swimming nations in the world is sold out and was due to be televised in both countries.
''We're doing a little bit of research to make sure that everything is the way it needs to be for us to take our team offshore,'' Hodge said. |
