OSTRAVA, Czech Republic -- Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang finished first in the pairs short program of the World Junior Figure Skating Championships on Monday.
Zhang and Zhang, who are not related, won convincingly with marks ranging all the way up to 5.8 out of a possible 6.0 for both technical merit and presentation.
The pair from China recently won the bronze medal at the Four Continents Cup, one of the International Skating Union's top senior events.
The Russian team of Julia Karbovskaya and Pavel Lebedev, the reigning World Junior silver medalists, finished second. The Chinese team of Yang Ding and Zongfei Ren -- the bronze medalists last year -- came third.
In the men's qualifying rounds, Japan's Kazumi Kishimoto won the A group. Canada's Shawn Sawyer was second, and Martin Leibers of Germany was third.
American Parker Pennington, one of the favorites, withdrew because of a back injury. Pennington was the U.S. junior champion in 2001.
In the other qualifying group, Russian Alexander Shubin finished first ahead of American Evan Lysacek. Alban Preaubert of France was third. |
