SAN FRANCISCO -- Lance Armstrong will be surrounded by familiar faces in his bid for a record-tying fifth Tour de France title.
The U.S. Postal Service squad announced its roster for the 2003 season Tuesday, and it includes all eight of the support riders who helped Armstrong win his fourth Tour victory.
The team also includes two Boulder, Colo., residents, Christian Vande Velde and Michael Barry.
This will be Vande Velde's sixth season with USPS. Barry, a former Canadian Under-23 national road champion, joined the team last year after riding for Saturn.
''I think we have started to really hit our stride in terms of teamwork, communication and camaraderie,'' Armstrong said. ''I'm looking forward to 2003 with these guys.''
Joining Armstrong are Tour of Spain runner-up Roberto Heras, Viatcheslav Ekimov, George Hincapie, Benoit Joachim, Floyd Landis, Pavel Padrnos, Victor Hugo Pena and Jose Luis Rubiera.
Armstrong can tie Miguel Indurain's record of five consecutive Tour de France titles, set from 1991-95.
The USPS squad also includes Michael Barry, Antonio Cruz, Steffen Kjaergaard, Matt White, Dave Zabriskie and Vande Velde. Along with Pena and Rubiera, those cyclists will support lead rider Heras at the Tour of Spain.
The remainder of the roster includes Kenny Labbe, Robbie Ventura and three newcomers: Damon Kluck, Guennadi Mikhailov and Max van Heeswijk. |
