Former Gophers coach among four inducted

Associated Press

ST. PAUL -- Former Minnesota Gophers coach Doug Woog was among four men inducted Wednesday night into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

Woog, who coached the Gophers for 14 years, was honored with former Harvard stars and Olympian brothers Mark and Scott Fusco and the late Joe Riley, a 1948 Olympian and standout at Dartmouth.

"I'm pretty lucky,'' said Woog, whose 389 victories are the most of any Gophers coach. "Not a lot of people get the opportunity to stay in the same community, the same state, within a mile for over 30 years.

"Every morning you wake up, you're not thinking about going to a job. The game of hockey was never a job for me, and that's a very fun way to live.''

The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame is located in Eveleth in northern Minnesota.
