| Tuesday, August 22 Dokic accepts berth on Australian squad | |||||
Reuters SYDNEY, Australia -- Jelena Dokic was named to Australia's Olympic tennis squad on Friday with most of her demands agreed to. The 17-year-old was given the go-ahead to stay at her Sydney home during the Games and granted permission to miss the closing ceremony, her manager John McCurdy said. She is due to play in Japan the following day. Dokic said earlier this month that the Australian Olympic team agreement contained some "really ridiculous things" and insisted on several concessions. She refused to stay at the Olympic village because she lived nearby. The Wimbledon semifinalist also wanted her controversial father and coach Damir to accompany her during the Games. "He'll be at the matches and watching her play but not in an official role," McCurdy said of Damir Dokic, who has clashed with officials and media in Birmingham, Wimbledon and Melbourne in the past 18 months. Tony Roche, sacked by Dokic as coach earlier this year, will be one of Australia's two team coaches at the Olympics. "There have been a few issues raised (with the Australian Olympic Committee) and they have been clarified," McCurdy said. "She's signed the agreement and she's very much looking forward to playing for Australia at the Olympics." Mark Philippoussis will also represent Australia in the Olympic tournament despite recent criticism by Davis Cup teammates. The Wimbledon quarterfinalist withdrew from his country's semifinal against Brazil in July, saying he was injured. His decision angered compatriot Patrick Rafter who publicly asked Philippoussis to stop "jerking us around." Wimbledon finalist Rafter, Philippoussis, Andrew Ilie and Lleyton Hewitt have been named for the singles. Doubles kings Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde will defend their Olympic title. Dokic plays singles and doubles, partnered by Rennae Stubbs. The other singles entries are Alicia Molik and Nicole Pratt. | ALSO SEE Dokic's dad detained by police after Wimbledon confrontation |
