Some teams have gone searching far and wide to add grit and toughness to their rosters, but the Maple Leafs have it in spades. Who could forget the inspired playoff performance by forward Gary Roberts? But, as is true with all the Original Six, nothing short of the Stanley Cup is acceptable. The Maple Leafs made it to the conference finals, but were knocked out by last year's Cinderella team -- Carolina.
Then came the hand-wringing, the finger pointing and the criticism. Then, the key defection. Goaltender Curtis Joseph actually took less money to go to Detroit because he felt they have a better chance to win. The Leafs signed up Ed Belfour as his replacement, a risky yet interesting move. The front office said it hasn't ruled out adding a big-name player to the mix, but so far, that chance hasn't presented itself. If the team stumbles out of the gate, look for changes.
Can the Eagle soar north of the border? No one can argue with Belfour's numbers over the course of his career, which includes a Stanley Cup championship in 1999. However, many feel the enigmatic (and at times incendiary) netminder is on the downside of his career. He and Dallas mutually parted company. A fresh start might be just what he needs.
Is the Leafs' defense good enough? The language from both sides was cautious with regard to the swap with Florida for Robert Svehla, talked out of retirement, for Dmitry Yushkevich, who missed a good part of the season because of a blood clot in his leg. The club will benefit from Svehla's hard-hitting game, which isn't much different from the way Yushkevich plays. No, the team doesn't have a bona fide Norris Trophy candidate, but they do have a good stable of blueliners -- Tomas Kaberle, Bryan McCabe, Aki Berg, Karel Pilar, Anders Eriksson, Wade Belak and Jyrki Lumme.
Coach and general manager for how long? There was great concern last spring about Pat Quinn's health when he was hospitalized with heart problems during the playoffs. However, Quinn, whose lost weight and changed his lifestyle during the offseason, plans to continue in both roles. He's helped by the fact the Leafs' front office has plenty of capable people in place -- such as Bill Watters and Ken Dryden -- so the pressure is spread around.
