The goal? To put the puck in it

There were no surprises in Atlanta last season. The NHL's 28th entry celebrated its inaugural campaign by winning a grand total of 14 games and finishing with just 39 points. By comparison, the NHL's next lowest team (Tampa Bay) finished with 15 more points. The roster entering camp doesn't have any significant changes, so don't expect Atlanta to improve too much.

The biggest move they made during the offseason was the acquisition of veteran defenseman Adam Burt. Burt will help stabilize a defensive corps led by 23-year-old Petr Buzek. The Thrashers decided not to bring back forwards Mike Stapleton and Johan Garpenlov, and the major goal in camp might be stabilizing the goaltending situation.

Here's a look at the rest of Atlanta's training camp.

Biggest question mark: Goals
Can anybody on this team score? The Thrashers will receive some offense again this season from veterans like Andrew Brunette, Ray Ferraro and Donald Audette. And look for youngster Patrik Stefan to reach the double-digit mark in goal-scoring. Aside from those four, there's not much left on this roster in the way of offense.

Just as Stefan has much to prove in camp, the Thrashers would like to see more from left wing Steve Guolla, who scored 10 goals last season and has put up some very good numbers in the minors. Center Andreas Karlsson, 25, is entering his second season and is capable of reaching the 15-20 goal mark. The same goes for veteran Dean Sylvester.

Bottom line: After the first line of Brunette, Ferraro and Audette, there's a huge dropoff in offensive production.

Biggest position battle: Goalie
The Thrashers used five different netminders last season. Damian Rhodes was the team's first-ever acquisition prior to '99-00, but the veteran went 5-19-3 with a 3.88 GAA. Thirty-nine netminders had a better GAA last season. But don't blame it all on Rhodes. After all, you'd be allowing a lot of goals, too, if you had to face an average of 30.9 shots every night.

Atlanta tried several others between the pipes. Norm Maracle, Scott Fankhouser, Rick Tabaracci and Scott Langkow all found out what it's like to be on the other end of a shooting gallery. Heading into camp, word is that a healthy Rhodes and Maracle should battle for the No.1 spot.

Future watch
Here, ESPN.com looks at one or two young players who could make an impact, either now or in the future.

Luke Sellars (Defense):
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound defenseman is more of a stay-at-home blueliner, though he has shown some offensive skills the last two seasons playing juniors in the OHL. However, his strong suit is his play in his own end, clearing the front of the net. The '99 second-round pick (30th overall) could be in the NHL this season, given Atlanta's woes on the blueline.
