When former GM Neil Smith and coach John Muckler got the boot with only days left in the '99-00 season, it was only a matter of time before a high-profile GM was brought in to raise a sinking ship.

Enter Glen Sather.

The architect of five Stanley Cup winners in Edmonton didn't waste time retooling the Rangers. First, he sent defensemen Kevin Hatcher and Mathieu Schneider packing. He cleaned the roster of Kevin Stevens, Darren Langdon and Rob DiMaio. Then, he brought in help on defense in the form of free agent Vladimir Malakhov and toughness at the forward position in Sandy McCarthy. He hired former Edmonton coach Ron Low as the new bench boss. But his most popular move was to bring back "The Captain," Mark Messier, who returns to New York in an attempt to lead a group of underachieving, overpaid players back to the playoffs.

Here's a look at the rest of the Rangers' training camp.

Question marks: Leetch, Fleury
Do you think it's total coincidence that ever since Messier left for Vancouver in '97 that Brian Leetch has seen his game go down the drain? Leetch was made captain of the team for the start of the '97-98 season, when all along, it should have been Adam Graves. Leetch is a better player when he doesn't have the burden of carrying the big "C" on his uniform. The All-Star defenseman had the worst season of his career last year, notching just seven goals and 26 points in an injury-shortened 50 contests.

Are Theo Fleury's better days behind him? Fleury was signed as a free agent by Neil Smith in July '99 after a 40-goal season. Instead of lighting it up, the right wing notched 15 goals. Only in his rookie season of '88-89 with Calgary did Fleury score fewer goals, and he notched 14 in just 36 games that year. Sather sat down with Fleury during the offseason and basically told him to shape up or ship out.

Position battles: Fourth line, Defense
The first two forward lines basically are set: Messier more than likely centering Fleury and Adam Graves, while Petr Nedved will once again center countrymen Jan Hlavac and Radek Dvorak. Tim Taylor will center the third line with John MacLean on one flank and Valeri Kamensky on the other. But the fourth line is wide open.Pavel Brendl will battle Sandy McCarthy for ice time, although they are vastly different players. At center, Manny Malhotra and rookie Jamie Lundmark compete for an NHL job, and Eric Lacroix will more than likely be back at left wing.

The first five spots on defense are set with Leetch, Malakhov, Kim Jonsson, Sylvain Lefebvre and Stephane Quintal. Rich Pilon, along with youngsters Jason Doig, Tomas Kloucek, Alexei Vasiliev and Mike Mottau skate for the two remaining roster spots. The surprise in this group could be Mottau, who finished a standout career at Boston College last season by winning the Hobey Baker Award. He averaged a point-per-game and could step right into the Blueshirts' lineup this season. However, he's unsigned, and even if signed, he'd have to secure the No. 6 spot to stay with the club. Management won't let a young talent be a healthy scratch in the NHL.

Future watch
Here, ESPN.com looks at one or two young players who could make an impact, either now or in the future.

Jamie Lundmark (Center):
Lundmark was taken ninth overall in the '99 draft and has star potential. He is a sniper with a tremendous wrist shot. The 19-year-old spent the last two seasons in the WHL. He was limited to 21 goals in 37 games in an injury-shortened season last year, but scored 40 goals in '98-99.

Pavel Brendl (Right wing):
The Rangers traded up last year to select Brendl with the fourth overall pick. Brendl is a pure scorer -- 132 goals in a combined 129 games the last two seasons for Calgary in the WHL. The knock on Brendl is that he has a lazy streak, although he is expected to report in much better shape than he did last year.
