Enter Glen Sather. The architect of five Stanley Cup winners in Edmonton didn't waste time retooling the Rangers. First, he sent defensemen Kevin Hatcher and Mathieu Schneider packing. He cleaned the roster of Kevin Stevens, Darren Langdon and Rob DiMaio. Then, he brought in help on defense in the form of free agent Vladimir Malakhov and toughness at the forward position in Sandy McCarthy. He hired former Edmonton coach Ron Low as the new bench boss. But his most popular move was to bring back "The Captain," Mark Messier, who returns to New York in an attempt to lead a group of underachieving, overpaid players back to the playoffs. Here's a look at the rest of the Rangers' training camp.
Question marks: Leetch, Fleury Are Theo Fleury's better days behind him? Fleury was signed as a free agent by Neil Smith in July '99 after a 40-goal season. Instead of lighting it up, the right wing notched 15 goals. Only in his rookie season of '88-89 with Calgary did Fleury score fewer goals, and he notched 14 in just 36 games that year. Sather sat down with Fleury during the offseason and basically told him to shape up or ship out.
Position battles: Fourth line, Defense The first five spots on defense are set with Leetch, Malakhov, Kim Jonsson, Sylvain Lefebvre and Stephane Quintal. Rich Pilon, along with youngsters Jason Doig, Tomas Kloucek, Alexei Vasiliev and Mike Mottau skate for the two remaining roster spots. The surprise in this group could be Mottau, who finished a standout career at Boston College last season by winning the Hobey Baker Award. He averaged a point-per-game and could step right into the Blueshirts' lineup this season. However, he's unsigned, and even if signed, he'd have to secure the No. 6 spot to stay with the club. Management won't let a young talent be a healthy scratch in the NHL.
