Odds are the conference standings will change every day from now until the end of the season. But why not take a look at who would face each other if the season ended today? Who would win a Devils-Sabres series, or how about Colorado-Edmonton? ESPN.com breaks it down.
| Western Conference |
|
Eastern Conference |
1. St. Louis vs. 8. San Jose The skinny: The Blues haven't shown signs of faltering. While St. Louis has been the most consistent team, San Jose has been an enigma. If the Sharks handle St. Louis' team speed -- which is doubtful -- and Steve Shields stands on his head, perhaps San Jose can stretch this one. But no way do they win four of seven. |
|
1. New Jersey vs.
8. Buffalo The skinny: The Devils hope Buffalo climbs up to No. 7 or drops out of the race because this would be another recipe for early-round humble pie. With Doug Gilmour, Chris Gratton and Mike Peca, the Sabres are strong at center. And Dominik Hasek looks better all the time. The Devils are still a great team, but they don't want this test this early. |
2. Dallas vs.
7. Phoenix The skinny: Unless something changes in the next week, this one has the look of a rout, even if the Coyotes get pumped up to face one of their big rivals. Dallas needs a focused Ed Belfour and healthy players, but the Stars seem impervious to distractions. Their all-around game is too strong. This series would go five at the most. |
|
2. Washington vs.
7. Pittsburgh The skinny: If Jaromir Jagr plays, this series would be exciting. The Penguins aren't terribly deep, and who knows how the goaltending will hold up, but they have the best offensive player in the world. The Caps don't wow anyone with style, but their substance is great goaltending, confidence and team chemistry. |
3. Colorado vs.
6. Edmonton The skinny: Edmonton has made a cottage industry of being a first-round nuisance. They have speed, and are too young to get intimidated. But the Avs may be too deep and too focused. Patrick Roy is playing well, and with Ray Bourque, the Avs have a purpose and someone strong enough to let Sandis Ozolinsh go where he wants. |
|
3. Toronto vs.
6. Ottawa The skinny: The battle of Ontario could be a little lopsided if the Senators don't get healthy. Not having Shawn McEachern and Magnus Arvedson would make it tough to keep up with the Maple Leafs. However, the passion of this series could level the playing field, and it will be exciting for Canadian fans -- and fans in general -- to watch. |
4. Detroit vs.
5. Los Angeles The skinny: Detroit is still gunning for the Blues, but they are also resting their veterans for the playoffs. Igor Larionov didn't make the trip to New York, and this could be a great move by Scotty Bowman. The Kings have made a turnaround from last season, but they don't have the goaltending or depth to compete with the Wings. |
|
4. Phildaelphia vs.
5. Florida The skinny: This could be a great series. No one knows how Philly will play without Eric Lindros. No one knows how Pavel Bure will play in the playoffs. The Flyers will try to shut him down and see if the other Panther lines can score. But sometimes Bure scores anyway. The Flyers might be too big, but goalies could decide this series. |
On their way up
Colorado: They have two solid lines, Bourque and this generation's best money goalie. Winning the Northwest isn't a done deal, but it's looking better every day.
Vancouver: It may be too little too late -- their first half was that bad -- but the Canucks can play with anyone right now. The most encouraging thing for them moving forward has been the play of beleaguered goalie Felix Potvin.
Heading south
Phoenix: When are these guys going to win again? The Coyotes have lost seven in a row and are in danger of missing the playoffs. Getting Keith Tkachuk back from suspension will help, but he needs to lead this team and get everyone going. Let's hope they haven't stopped listening to coach Bob Francis, who, at one time, was considered a frontrunner for the Jack Adams trophy.
Carolina: Monday's home loss to the Sabres hurts. The Hurricanes came out and played well but couldn't get a few past Hasek. Once Buffalo weathered the early onslaught, the Sabres capitalized. Carolina needed Arturs Irbe to steal a game, and he couldn't do it. They could be done.
Rangers: Not much to say here that hasn't been said. Money can't buy team chemistry, and it can't buy leadership. There is some good talent on the roster, but some changes must be made to add tenacity and confidence.
