Sharks looking mean once again

Oct. 16, 2000

People bemoaned Colorado's high ranking when the Avs didn't have a win. How about now? At 3-0-2, Colorado is one of two remaining unbeatens. No disrespect to Ottawa, the other undefeated team, but let's see how injured Patrick Lalime is because he's been great so far.

ESPN.com's secret formula has taken it all into account. To right any wrongs, click here and give us a few Rank Comments of your own.

Team PVS W-L-T ESPN.com says
1. Avalanche 2 3-0-2 Forget about Terry Sawchuk's record. How about Patrick Roy's 1.36 GAA and .935 save percentage?
2. Blues 3 3-1-1 Like Rob Reiner's mom says about Meg Ryan's diner "episode," in "When Harry Met Sally," I'll have what Scott Young (6 goals) is having.
3. Devils 1 2-1-0 That loss in Ottawa not looking so bad. Five of next six are on the road.
4. Coyotes 7 4-1-0 It's October, and Phoenix is awesome. Seen this before? Don't get too excited.
5. Kings 11 3-2-1 Maybe, this is too high. But Ziggy Palffy and Luc Robitaille are as fun to watch as any two players in the league.
6. Senators 8 3-0-1 So, they might deserve it over the Kings. Patrick Lalime has been great, but now he's hurt. We'll see how Jani Hurme does.
7. Stars 9 3-2-1 Brett Hull keeps climbing up the goal charts, but regardless, he's on pace to score more than 40 goals for the first time since '96-97.
8. Red Wings 6 2-3-0 Losing 4-2 at home to Calgary isn't good. If they don't get Stevie Y back soon, they'll be the Dead Wings on Wednesday vs. St. Louis.
9. Maple Leafs 4 2-2-0 Starting the season 2-2 on a four-game homestand was not the goal. After the 4-0 loss to the Sens, Leafs are just looking for one ... a goal, that is.
10. Oilers 12 4-1-1 As good as they've been, Tom Poti's hasn't been so great. The promising youngster got his first point Sunday and is a minus-2. With Roman Hamrlik gone, he must be better.
11. Penguins 15 3-1-0 Regardless of finances, with Jaromir Jagr around, the Pens will never be bad ... or boring.
12. Sharks 19 2-1-0 Owen Nolan is signed and the Sharks are over .500. GM Dean Lombardi got it done; now, let's see if the team can do the same.
13. Sabres 5 2-2-0 After nine goals the first two games, Sabres back to old ways with just two in consecutive losses.
14. Flyers 10 1-3-1 Now, LeClair might need surgery. That $30-plus milllion deal looks pretty good right now, doesn't it? Wouldn't want to see him rush back due to contract-year pressure.
15. Panthers 14 0-1-1-1 Right now, the only team in Florida without a victory. Ouch. Panthers might not get first win until Oct. 22 in Minnesota.
16. Rangers 17 2-1-0 Karma still good. Defense and goaltending still bad.
17. Predators 23 3-1-0 If they can win at least one of the next three (L.A., Detroit, San Jose), Preds will no doubt crack the playoff-worthy top 16.
18. Bruins 16 3-2-1 One line and no goalies isn't exactly a recipe for consistency.
19. Capitals 13 0-3-2 If pattern holds true -- Cup appearance, followed by bad year, followed by great year -- Caps are in for more of the same.
20. Hurricanes 22 1-1-2 The resurgence of the Southeast Division? The Canes are first in a division where no team is above .500.
21. Flames 25 2-3-0 Very interesting group. Two good goalies. Young team. New coach. Flames could surprise people. Just ask Detroit.
22. Ducks 18 1-2-0 Paul Kariya has one assist and is a minus-1 so far. Heck Paul, take a penalty just to get a crooked number on the statsheet.
23. Canucks 20 3-2-0 Ed Jovanovski is the team's No. 2 point producer? But things look pretty good, especially with seven of the next nine at home.
24. Lightning 21 1-2-1 If these guys don't beat the Wild on Wednesday, this four-game trip could be a disaster with Rangers, Devils and Red Wings on the docket.
25. Canadiens 27 2-3-0 Just when you think the Habs are going completely in the tank, they win a few. Looks like they might be tough to beat on home ice.
26. Blackhawks 24 2-2-0 Want to know what a bad habit is? Flirting with losses vs. expansion teams. One of these days, Hawks will lose one ... can't wait to read the Trib or Sun-Times after one of those.
27. Blue Jackets 28 1-4-0 At least they got a win. But Jackets are going to allow a lot of goals against this season.
28. Islanders 26 0-2-1 These guys should be able to score more than this! C'mon. Getting shut out by the Flames at home?
29. Wild 30 0-4-1 Wednesday at home against the Lightning. Crank it up!
30. Thrashers 29 0-2-1 Um ... Donald Audette looks pretty good.
