Devils stay red hot at the top

 Jan. 24, 2000

This was one tough week. OK, so the No. 1 spot was easy because the Devils just keep on rolling. But with the big Keith Primeau trade and a lot of the top teams hitting a midseason slump, "little guys" like Washington made some big moves. Dare we say the Southeast Division is no longer the league's weakest?

ESPN.com's secret formula has taken it all into account for this week's rankings. To right any wrongs in these rankings, click here and give us a few Rank Comments of your own.

Team PVS W-L-T-RT ESPN.com says
1.   Devils 1 30-13-5-3 In an over-priced era, Patrik Elias and his 20 goals are a bargain. Maybe, his contract whining was justifed.
2.   Panthers 3 28-15-4-3 Not much else to say. Bring back the rats from '96 because these Panthers are going places.
3.   Stars 6 25-18-5-2 Other teams may not fear these guys, but when healthy, Stars will only get better; however, health is more of an "if" than a "when."
4.   Capitals 11 20-17-8-1 Hot-diggity-dog. The Caps are bustin' out in the nation's capital. Maybe they'll start drawing some fans for the coming four-game home stand.
5.   Blues 2 28-14-6-0 Loss to Pittsburgh hurt, but losing Al MacInnis hurts more.
6.   Leafs 9 27-16-5-3 Florida hopped over them in the East, but Leafs rebounded well from Calgary loss. Leafs allowing too many goals -- 13 in last three games.
7.   'Yotes 8 26-16-6-0 Keith Tkachuk can do one of two things: Take slap shots at the owner's box, or kick some ass on the ice. Perhaps, both?
8.   Wings 5 28-14-6-1 Stevie Y's mad about the team's play. Don't expect the slump to last much longer, especially after good win in Ottawa.
9.   Flyers 4 25-14-8-1 It will take Primeau a while to contribute. Let's evaluate this trade in March. Rod Brind'Amour will be missed, but team's future still rides on Eric Lindros.
10. Rangers 14 19-20-7-3 Nearing the .500 mark. Question is whether Kevin Stevens situation will affect the team because he's a well-liked veteran.
11. Avalanche 7 24-18-7-1 From the bad progression department: Went from shutout win, to scoreless tie, to 3-3 tie with Anaheim to 3-2 loss to Kings. Next three are on the road.
12. Senators 10 24-16-7-2 No shame in losing to Detroit. Magnus Arvedson's injury was one of season's ugliest and most painful.
13. Flames 12 22-20-5-1 Besides spanking in Edmonton, Flames continue as feel-good story of the season.
14. Sharks 13 22-23-6-5 Past the halfway point, and Sharks struggle to stay above .500. Maybe, this year isn't so different.
15. Oilers 16 15-19-13-6 From the beating a dead horse department: If overtime losses didn't count in the loss column (just as "RT"), the Oilers would be 15-13-13-6.
16. Kings 19 20-19-7-3 Glen Murray and Jozef Stumpel are back, and the Kings should be too.
17. Penguins 18 19-23-4-5 Game with Flyers was one of the season's best, and Jaromir Jagr and Lindros didn't even play. But the Pens need wins, not ties.
18. Ducks 15 20-23-6-1 The only Pacific team with 10 home losses. Message to Craig Hartsburg: Open it up and let the skill guys go. At least the team will be fun to watch.
19. Bruins 25 16-20-13-3 Not a bad week, but they're still not a good team. Hey Harry, make a deal and don't just offer a used puck bag in trade proposals. Gotta give to get.
20. 'Canes 17 18-22-8-0 Brind'Amour will help right away, but he wasn't there last week when the 'Canes went 1-3.
21. Canadiens 22 16-24-6-1 A two-win week, but lost another vet in Scott Thornton. There's so much old Habs talent helping other teams win.
22. Predators 23 17-25-6-4 The best that can be said about Nashville is that this team hardly ever gets blown out. They compete every night.
23. Canucks 20 14-23-10-5 Suck it up, trade Mark Messier and get ready for the Sedin twins. The future isn't now.
24. 'Hawks 21 16-27-6-2 Only three goals in three games. Team looks better but no goals ... no wins.
25. Sabres 24 18-24-6-2 Equipment bonus Q&A: Does Dominik Hasek want to play or just make more money?
26. Islanders 28 11-30-6-1 Zeroes are wild. Isles were shut out twice in a row, and then blanked the lowlier (Is that a word?) Lightning.
27. Thrashers 26 11-29-6-3 Threes are wild in Atlanta, where the Flames, er, Thrashers scored three goals in each of last four games but didn't win any of them.
28. Lightning 27 11-28-6-4 Was it a little birdie that told ESPN.com that Kevin Hodson could be traded?
