Detroit gets bumped from top spot

 Jan. 3, 2000

The new century is upon us, and the only Y2K glitches we can discern are a few teams that have been heavily overrated by ESPN.com's Power Rankings. Also, some teams with fair-to-bad records are extremely dangerous right now. Few teams want to play Nashville and Calgary. Oh, and sorry Detroit, Philly's back on top.

ESPN.com's secret formula has taken it all into account for this week's rankings. To right any wrongs in these rankings, click here and give us a few Rank Comments of your own.

Team PVS W-L-T-RT ESPN.com says
1.   Flyers 4 22-11-6-1 When Adam Burt scores, you know things are going well. Top power play in the NHL.
2.   Wings 1 25-10-4-1 What happens when the best team in the world goes against the best player in the world? Oh, you know. The best guy won.
3.   Leafs 2 23-12-4-2 Eight goals allowed against offensive juggernaut Buffalo was just that: Offensive. Look for payback on Monday at home vs. the Sabres.
4.   Blues 3 22-11-5-0 Blues have allowed one goal or less 14 times this season.
5.   Senators 6 19-12-6-1 Sens seem to play better when no one pays attention to them. Only one loss since Dec. 4.
6.   Penguins 8 17-17-3-5 The biggest miracle of the Herb Brooks era? Fans are starting to pack the Igloo.
7.   Devils 10 21-12-5-2 Three road games this week are key if Devils plan to catch Toronto and Philly.
8.   Avalanche 14 18-16-4-1 Colorado is 2-0 when Peter Forsberg and Joe Sakic record points in the same game. That'll be happening a lot more.
9.   'Yotes 5 21-13-4-0 So, Keith Tkachuk will make an absurd amount of cash next year. But is that a reason to trade him and ruin the team's chances for this season?
10. Panthers 9 21-13-3-3 Trade for Mike Vernon shows players and fans that management wants to win, regardless of Trevor Kidd's prognosis.
11. Stars 11 19-15-5-1 With the No. 600 monkey off his back, look for Brett Hull to score with more regularity.
12. Flames 7 17-17-5-1 If coach Brian Sutter's boys keep it up, they could become the Oakland A's of the NHL.
13. Predators 17 14-20-5-2 Think they're overrated? Recent wins include San Jose, Carolina and St. Louis. Would you want your team to face them right now?
14. Sharks 15 20-19-4-3 First-place team in the best division at No. 14. Silly, right? Wrong. Phoenix trails by a point with five games in hand. Sharks and consistency don't mix.
15. Sabres 13 16-17-5-1 The eight goals scored against Toronto was the most since since March 22, 1993 at Montreal.
16. Kings 18 17-14-6-2 Yes, they're better than this. But snapping a six-game losing streak doesn't mean they're through the woods yet.
17. Oilers 19 13-17-9-5 Big Weight off Oilers shoulders. Doug is looking pretty good heading into the new year, getting points in his last three games.
18. Ducks 12 18-17-4-1 How can a team with Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne have the third-worst power play in the league?
19. 'Canes 16 15-16-7-0 In Hartford, they were the "Forever .500s." Right now, the Canes aren't even that.
20. Capitals 27 13-16-7-1 Performances against Blues and Penguins show that Caps can compete. Is Chris Simon the best-skilled NHL tough guy?
21. Rangers 21 12-18-7-3 What can be said that hasn't? Radek Dvorak pickup was actually both a good and practical move.
22. Bruins 22 13-16-10-2 Firing Pat Burns would be like an army using its best general to clean the latrine.
23. Canucks 20 12-18-7-3 From the concise alliteration department: Fading fast.
24. 'Hawks 26 11-22-6-2 There is little excuse for having three more wins (7) on the road than at home (4).
25. Canadiens 24 12-21-5-1 From the bitter consolation department: Habs are the hardest working last-place team in hockey.
26. Islanders 23 9-22-5-0 Their 74 goals for is the league's lowest by eight goals.
27. Thrashers 25 8-25-4-3 If anyone has benefitted from expansion, it's Andrew Brunette. Full seasons in Nashville (31 points) and Atlanta (32) allowed him to prove himself.
28. Lightning 28 10-21-5-3 Who did coach Steve Ludzik blame after a recent loss? "We play great, we really played well, but let's face it, we need some saves."
