Blackhawks vs. Canadiens
Chicago: The Blackhawks blew a lead late in the third period and dropped a 5-4 overtime decision at Montreal on Saturday. Chicago is off to another slow start, falling to 3-8-4 in October over the last two seasons. ... The Hawks surrendered the tying goal with 24 seconds remaining and lost when D Patrice Brisebois scored in overtime. "I'm disappointed with my defense," coach Alpo Suhonen said. "There's no way we shouild lose with 20 seconds to go in the game. It was a bad goal, I think we scored it on ourselves." ... Chicago is 2-7 in its last nine trips to Montreal. ... C Alexei Zhamnov had a power-play goal and two assists, giving him five points in the first four games of the season. ... RW Tony Amonte added a goal and an assist and Cs Michael Nylander and Steve Sullivan each contributed two assists. ... It was a long night for D Boris Mironov, who took four minor penalties and was a minus-1.

Montreal: The Canadiens rallied for an emotional 5-4 overtime victory over Chicago on Saturday. RW Dainius Zubrus capped his first career hat trick by scoring with 24 seconds remaining in regulation. D Patrice Brisebois scored his second game-winner in as many games 2:39 into the extra period. "Brisebois leads by example," coach Alain Vigneault said. "When you play 4-on-4 in overtime, a pass like the one (Trevor) Linden gave to Brisebois usually works." ... Zubrus' hat trick was the first by a Canadien since Linden got one against Edmonton last February 8. ... Vigneault had nothing but good things to say about the unit of Zubrus, C Sergei Zholtok and LW Oleg Petrov. "That's our best line. ... Those three guys are especially made for each other," he said. ... The Canadiens got bad news before the game when they learned that captain C Saku Koivu will undergo left knee surgery on Tuesday and will be out at least three months. He was injured in Wednesday's loss to the New York Rangers after colliding with LW Eric Lacroix. "I knew my ligament was torn the minute he hit me," Koivu said. "I'm disappointed and I'm frustrated. It's an emotional season for me once again. Life brings you funny things. Things like that happen. There's nothing you can do about it." Koivu has had just one injury-free campaign since entering the NHL.

Senators vs. Maple Leafs
Ottawa: G Patrick Lalime turned aside 26 shots on Saturday for his seventh career shutout and helped the Senators remain undefeated. In the last week, Ottawa has defeated Dallas, New Jersey and Toronto by a combined 10-2 margin. ... Rookie C Martin Havlat scored his first NHL goal on a breakaway 3:06 into the second period. ... LW Rob Zamuner scored a shorthanded goal in the third period before D Sami Salo, who was playing in his 100th career game, tallied a 5-on-3 goal in the final two minutes. ... C Alexei Yashin picked up an assist on Salo's goal, giving him a point in each of the Senators' first four games.

Toronto: The Maple Leafs were blanked on Saturday and ended their season-opening four-game homestand at 2-2. Toronto lost its composure in the third period, getting called for five minors and two misconducts in the final nine minutes. The Leafs gave up a shorthanded goal and a 5-on-3 goal to D Sami Salo in the final two minutes. ... G Curtis Joseph returned to the lineup after sitting out Wednesday's game against the New York Islanders and stopped 30 shops. ... LW Gordie Roberts dressed despite getting hit by a slap shot in the thigh with one minute remaining in Wednesday's contest. Roberts was carried off the ice and his status for Saturday night's contest had been uncertain.

Mighty Ducks vs. Devils
Anaheim: The Mighty Ducks have dropped three straight for the first time since a four-game slide from Dec. 27-Jan. 5. ... The Ducks were outshot 27-10 over the first two periods and gave up four goals in Saturday's 4-2 setback at New Jersey. "I don't know about how many times we started out slowly," Ducks coach Craig Hartsburg said. "The thing is that we have to play with desperation for 60 full minutes and then you get rewards out of it. But if you don't make a habit of it, you are in and out and there isn't a whole lot of success." ... LW Paul Kariya was held without a point for the third time in four game. ... This contest opened a five-game road trip for Anaheim.

New Jersey: Once again, the Devils proved to be a nuisance for Anaheim. The Devils have won six straight against the Mighty Ducks, thanks to Saturday's 4-2 victory, and are 6-1 at home against Anaheim. They have not fallen to the Ducks since November 26, 1997. ... C Bobby Holik scored twice for the first time since November 24, 1999 against Anaheim and RW Randy McKay tallied twice for the first time since December 3 against Ottawa. ... The Devils were 3-for-5 on the power play overall and outshot the Ducks, 27-10, in the first two periods.

Flames vs. Islanders
Calgary: It took a visit to Long Island for the Flames to record their first victory of the season. They have won five straight road games and are 7-1-1 overall in the last nine contests against the Islanders. Calgary was the last team in the NHL to record a point in the standings. ... Two key offensive players picked up their first points of the season in Saturday's triumph. ... RW Valeri Bure, the team's leading scorer in 1999-00, collected his first assist of the season. LW Cory Stillman scored his first goal since December 7, 1999. He scored 12 goals when his season was cut short due to shoulder surgery. "It's tough getting back and there is no excuse for not playing well or not scoring," he said. "But it's going to take a while to get back into the swing of things. I missed 45 games last year and I want to get back on track as quick as I can." ... The Flames managed just one shot in the third period, but still held on for the win.

New York: Despite a sellout crowd of 16,297 at the home opener, the result was much of the same as the Islanders were shutout, 2-0, by Calgary on Saturday. They have scored just five goals in the first three games and are 0-for-20 with the man advantage. "It's hard to say, we tried to shoot everything we have," RW Mariusz Czerkawski said. "We hit a post and had a couple of chances and (G Fred Brathwaite) made a great save on me in the last 40 seconds of the game. Nothing goes in, we have to practice it again." ... After being outshot by a 27-13 margin in the first two periods, the Islanders allowed just one shot in the third and fired 12 in search of the first goal. ... C Tim Connolly, who flashed some All-Star potential during his rookie campaign, has yet to record a point in the first three games.

Rangers vs. Penguins
New York: The Rangers struggled to contain RW Jaromir Jagr in Saturday's 8-6 loss at Pittsburgh. Jagr recorded his first career four-goal game to deal New York its first loss of the season. "Jagr was terrific. Man, was he terrific," coach Ron Low said. Added C Mark Messier, who had two power-play goals an assist: "Jagr's a tremendous player. The way the rules are right now, it becomes even tougher." ... The Rangers failed in a bid for their first 3-0 start since the 1989-90 season. ... G Kirk McLean surrendered all eight goals on 33 shots before he was replaced by rookie G Jason LaBarbera with 9:00 left in the third period. McLean is 2-13 lifetime against Pittsburgh. ... RW Theo Fleury scored his first two goals of the season and added two assists, equaling his most productive night in a Rangers' uniform. He had a goal and three assists against Tampa Bay last December 19. ... D Brian Leetch collected three assists for his most productive night since March 8, 1999, when he set up three goals against Toronto.

Pittsburgh: Jet lag, what jet lag? The Penguins improved to 2-0 since returning from Japan with a wild 8-6 victory over the New York Rangers on Saturday. ... RW Jaromir Jagr has dozens of accomplishments during a spectacular NHL career. But he never had a four-goal game until Saturday. The last Penguin to score four times in one contest was current owner Mario Lemieux, who did it at Montreal on January 26, 1997. "It's just so good playing with Jagr instead of against him," quipped D Bob Boughner. ... Pittsburgh surrendered four goals on nine power-play chances on Saturday. ... Rookie Cs Milan Kraft and Roman Simicek both scored their first NHL goals against the Rangers. ... After going 2-for-22 on the power play in the first three games, the Pens were 2-for-8 on Saturday. ... Pittsburgh is unbeaten in seven of the last eight home games against the Rangers (4-1-3).

Capitals vs. Stars
Washington: The Capitals stretched their winless streak at the start of the season to five games with a 2-0 blanking in Dallas on Saturday. The 1993-94 squad began the season with six consecutive losses, but recovered to make the playoffs. ... The Capitals scored just seven goals on their four-game road trip in which they went 0-2-2. ... Washington has not led in any period of its five games in the young season. "Obviously, we need to be more consistent," C Adam Oates said. "We're down now, but we're expecting better, we just need to regroup and get back on a roll. Morale is still good." ... Washington begins a three-game homestand on Tuesday against Colorado. ... Five players garnered a minus-one rating, with the rest finishing even, because two of the three goals allowed were on the power play. ... G Olaf Kolzig played his second straight game since returning from knee surgery and stopped 17 shots, but dropped to 0-2 on the season.

Dallas: The Stars did not have too much trouble in helping G Ed Belfour record his 50th shutout in a 2-0 blanking of Washington on Saturday. The Stars allowed just 12 shots, including three in the final period. ... Belfour, who lost the Vezina Trophy to his opponent in Saturday's game, Olaf Kolzig, talked about playing against elite goaltenders. "I don't worry about that," he said. "I know who I play against and who they are and I just enjoy competing." ... Dallas had scored just three power-play goals in its first five games, but tallied twice with the man advantage in the victory. The Stars are 2-0-1 at Reunion Arena and finish a three-game homestand with a contest against San Jose on Wednesday. ... C Mike Modano and RW Jamie Langenbrunner both missed the Stars' last game, but returned to the lineup to score and collect an assist. Modano was out with a back injury, while Langenbrunner was with his wife, who gave birth to a baby boy on Thursday.

Hurricanes vs. Predators
Carolina: The Hurricanes fell to 0-3 all-time in Nashville after Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Predators. Carolina was outshot, 34-24, and went 0-for-6 on the power play. "We were unable to score on the power play and that was the difference in the game," said D Sandis Ozolinsh. "We didn't get a lot of shots, but the ones we did get (Tomas) Vokoun was able to stop." ... Saturday's loss prevented the Hurricanes from going unbeaten in the first four games of a season for the first time since 1995-96 when they were the Hartford Whalers and raced to a 4-0-1 start.

Nashville: The Predators are two games over .500 for the first time in the franchise's three seasons following a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. Nashville has posted consecutive wins for the first time since March 17-19. ... G Tomas Vokoun made 23 saves in his second start of the season. Vokoun 38 saves in a 3-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Japan on October 7. "Were getting great goaltending," said RW Tom Fitzgerald. "We need to continue to do the little things to keep getting these type of wins. When teams come in here they know what kind of energy we have on this team."

Blue Jackets vs. Avalanche
Columbus: The Blue Jackets were the victims on Saturday as G Patrick Roy tied the NHL record for most career wins by a goaltender. Roy had to stop only 15 shots as Colorado shut down Columbus, 3-1. ... Rookie C David Vyborny scored the only goal on the power play as the Blue Jackets went 1-of-2. They are 2-for-19 this season. ... G Marc Denis played sensationally in his first game back in Denver, stopping 30 shots. "It's great to be back," said Denis, who spent last season as Roy's understudy. "I think we wanted to make a statement that we had character. It's a good sign tonight." Denis admitted it was strange suiting up in the visitors' locker room at the Pepsi Center. He also was puzzled by referees Mike Leggo and Brad Watson, who gave the Blue Jackets only two power plays and the Avalanche eight. "The penalties were tough. I am not sure the referrees were wearing Avs' underwear," he joked. Added D Lyle Odelein, "We took some penalties we should not have and there were a few questionable calls." ... Columbus concludes its three-game road trip on Sunday in Chicago, which spoiled the Blue Jackets' home opener last week.

Colorado: G Patrick Roy tied Terry Sawchuk's NHL record on Saturday with his 447th career win. He stopped 14 shots in a 3-1 victory over expansion Columbus and can break Sawchuk's mark on Tuesday at Washington. "When it was 1-1 after two periods, I was confident," Roy said. "We had a lot of chances early in the game and even hit two posts, but I had the confidence with the way we were playing we could pull it out." Ironically, the milestone win came against G Marc Denis, who was Roy's backup last season before being traded to the Blue Jackets. "It was different than I thought," Roy said. "At the end of the game, I thought I would be jumping up and down. I thought for a while that Marc Denis would be the spoiler." ... C Chris Drury and D Jon Klemm scored power-play goals for Colorado, which at 3-0-2 is off to its best start since going 5-0-2 in 1997-98. ... The Avs improved to 13-2-4 in home openers, including a 4-1-1 mark in Denver. ... C Peter Forsberg scored a highlight film goal to extend his points streak to three games. But C Stephane Yelle had his four-game streak snapped.

Sabres vs. Canucks
Buffalo: It was a dismal trip to the Canadian west for the Sabres, who were blanked by G Felix Potvin and Vancouver on Saturday, 4-0. Coach Lindy Ruff was not pleased with the effort as Buffalo suffered its second loss in 24 hours after starting the season 2-0. "I'm very disappointed and I hope (the players) are, too," he said. "To move up in this league, you've got to win on the road. We got flat-out busted." ... G Dominik Hasek made his second straight start since returning to the lineup and stopped 28 saves. ... Buffalo's special teams also struggled. The Sabres were 0-for-6 on the power play for the second straight game while surrendering two power-play goals to a Vancouver team that had only two in its first four games. ... The shutout ended the three-game points streaks of C Doug Gilmour and RW Maxim Afinogenov. ... Buffalo is 16-24-10 all-time at Vancouver.

Vancouver: Coach Marc Crawford had faith in G Felix Potvin and Potvin rewarded it on Saturday with a 4-0 blanking of the Buffalo Sabres. Potvin entered with a league-worst .791 save percentage and a 5.45 goals-against average that ranked 37th among 38 NHL goaltenders. But he recorded his 14th career shutout and first since November 10, 1999, when he whitewashed Carolina, 2-0, as a member of the New York Islanders. "We got great goaltending from Felix tonight," said D Ed Jovanovski, who recorded a career-best three assists. "We had no question about his ability. He's a battler. He was the backbone today." ... The Canucks were 2-for-8 on the power play after scoring twice in 22 chances in their first four games. ... LW Daniel Sedin had an assist to extend his points streak to three games. ... C Andrew Cassels has produced consecutive two-point efforts. ... Vancouver had allowed at least one power-play goal in its first four games before killing all six Sabres' advantages. ... The Canucks' five-game homestand continues on Monday against Toronto.
