Sakic hits his stride

By Brian A. Shactman
ESPN.com

The Avs keep rolling despite major injuries to key players. The reason? Joe Sakic. While the Avs haven't missed a beat, Alexander Mogilny and Scott Stevens symbolize the woes of the defending Cup-champ Devils.

Each week, ESPN.com goes inside the numbers to see who in the league is tearing it up ... and whose contracts might need to be torn up. Here is this week's list of the hot and not.

Who's Hot

Joe Sakic: 4 GP, 4-5-9, plus-8
Anyone talking of Joe Sakic being on the downside of his career can put a sock in it. In his six games this month, "Quoteless Joe" has 13 points and is an astonishing plus-10. And now with Forsberg out, he's going to see even more ice time this week.
Alexei Kovalev: 4 GP, 4-4-8
Everyone marvels at his talent. But ask the Rangers, and they'll shake their head that he never live up to his potential while in New York. Perhaps, Kovalev is ready to shed that underachiever label. He doesn't have Jaromir Jagr's size, but at his best, Kovalev's skills might be unmatched.
Jamie Storr: 4 GP, 1.44 GAA, .946 save pct.
Goaltending is considered a weakness in Los Angeles. But it seems Storr has turned the corner, which is especially good for the Kings because of Stephane Fiset's injury. Storr's confidence must be sky high after his impressive week.

Who's Not Hot

Alexander Mogilny: 3 GP, 0-0-0, minus-6
Mogilny started the season like a house on fire, amassing 15 points in 10 October games. All the talk was of the old Mogilny being poised to tear it up. But since then, he has two points in his last six games and is a minus-5.
Guy Hebert: 2 GP, 0-2, allowed 7 goals, got yanked once
The Ducks are in major trouble, and they need their top-flight players to bail them out. Behind Teemu Sleanne and Paul Kariya, Hebert is crucial for any success the Ducks have. And he hasn't been impressive of late; same with the slumping Ducks, winless in their last seven games.
Scott Stevens: 3 GP, 1 point, minus-6
Maybe it's time to get Scott Niedermayer back on the ice. No one would like that more than Stevens, who has struggled mightily of late. Stevens is an incredibly conditioned athlete, but at this point in his career, it helps him to have the right supporting cast. Niedermayer provides depth and puck movement, enabling Stevens to focus on shutting down the opposition's top guns.
