Though re-signing unrestricted free agent Teemu Selanne at a lower salary could be considered a major offseason move, the San Jose Sharks refrained from actually plunging into free-agent market this offseason. Will the status quo suffice if they can't re-sign No. 1 goalie Evgeni Nabokov? ESPN.com asked for your thoughts about the Sharks. Here is an edited sampling of your responses:
The Sharks will go as far as their power play takes them. Say all you want about Selanne's missed open net, but the lack of a consistent power play was their downfall. With a reasonable one they win the one game they needed for home ice and the Colorado series never goes to seven games. Jeff Jillson has the potential to be the big gun they lack on the point. Selanne, Marco Sturm and Patrick Marleau could be magic. I see second place in the West and a seven-game conference final showdown with Curtis Joseph and the Wings.

As a season ticket holder for the past 10 year, I felt the Sharks had everything it takes to win the Cup last season, except for that "killer instinct" that Detroit and the Avs seem to have. Whenever those teams have a team on the ropes, they bury them. While the Sharks sometimes showed this ability, they very much lacked it in the playoffs. I think with the past years' bitter experience, the Sharks are ready to prove they can move forward this year.

In order to achieve something in the upcoming season, the Sharks must get more toughness and a world-class center to feed Selanne. That's it.

The Sharks have a good thing going, and everyone in the locker room knows it. There's no way a star like Selanne would've taken a pay cut to stay in San Jose if he didn't think the Sharks could win the Cup. And the Sharks' third and fourth lines could be the best in hockey, so depth won't be a problem during a Cup run into June.

Miikka Kiprusoff and Vesa Toskala are both more than able to "hold down the fort" if Nabokov is not signed by the beginning of the season. Like Nabokov did with Steve Shields, there are times that Kiprusoff displays even greater brilliance. Both are excellent goalies, and Toskala is no slouch. The Sharks' defense gets talked up a lot nowadays, but a lot of it comes down to the great play of the goalies. Each and every one of the Sharks' defensemen has something to prove after playing poorly in the playoffs -- poorly compared expectations.

I'm sure there's buckets of optimism in places like Dallas and Phoenix because of their offseason signings. However, the Sharks should fare far better than last year in both the regular season and the playoffs because they have heart, which is something most teams have unsuccessfully tried to buy.

I think that the Sharks will have another successful regular season, only to see things go down the tubes in the playoffs, via Detroit, St. Louis, or Dallas. San Jose needs more goals, and apparently the crew of Selanne, Vincent Damphousse, Owen Nolan, and the rest can't get it done. If they went out and inked a Tony Amonte or a Bill Guerin, they'd be in good shape, because they are really one goal scorer away from being a serious threat to win the Stanley Cup. But if this team looks the same in May as it does now, they'll be watching ESPN's third and fourth round coverage.

San Jose will have a really tough year. The Pacific Division is tough enough, but by adding some major talent (Guerin in Dallas, Amonte in Phoenix) it will be even more challenging. If San Jose can re-sign all of the young talent left before the start of the season (Nabokov, Brad Stuart, Matt Bradley, Scott Hannan, Mark Smith) and improve on the power play, then they will be unstoppable. Dallas and Phoenix may have added major talent, but they lack in the cohesion and chemistry departments. No team has strong chemistry both in the locker room and on the ice like the Sharks.

I truly hope that Lindsay Berra is right. The Sharks seem to have all the pieces of the puzzle, assuming everyone gets signed. It's nice to see a team that has grown together. However, it concerns me that the players and Darryl Sutter aren't locked up longer. Most of these guys are relatively young. I am not sure that management is committed to keeping this squad together. Interesting that Berra didn't speak much of Nolan. Some people have said that he isn't a great leader and hasn't performed in the crunch. They would rather see Selanne with the "C" and dump Nolan to sign the other guys. Incidentally, the same people wouldn't Gary Suter retiring. I have to say that last year he wasn't great. Jillson looks good. San Jose loves the Sharks. The atmosphere is amazing. The stressed-out workers of Silicon Valley need a bloody sport to blow off steam after a 60 hour work week. The Mike Ricci line plays like the people work -- blue collar. Even when the Sharks were terrible, the place sold out every night. Management owes it to the city of San Jose to keep this team together. And please rename the San Jose Arena already.
