Users: Not everyone's buying

"If this team can't win under Ken Hitchcock, then I am convinced it can't win under anyone," Flyers chairman Ed Snider said after the team named the former Stars coach to replace Bill Barber as Philadelphia coach.

Snider may be convinced, but is the paying public? ESPN.com wondered what our users thought of the Flyers' chances for next season. Here is a sampling of your responses:

The Flyers will never win the Cup with the egocentric Clarke in the front office. Period. ... It's time to let the stranglehold on the past go and move on.

Jim Evans
Denver, Penn.

The Flyers just got a swift Hitch-kick in the tail and Detroit better not get used to holding that Cup too long because it has to take a long flight to the East Coast next year. The Flyers will put their egos aside, Roenick will adjust, and the heart of Philly sports will beat proudly in the chests of all the Flyers next season.

Matt Grumbrecht
Lancaster, Penn.

I believe that the season hinges on two players. The first is Cechmanek. If he provides the solid goaltending that is expected from him, the Flyers will excel defensively. The second player is Justin Williams. The Flyers remained virtually idle this free-agent period in hopes that he will play to his potential this year. If he does, the Flyers will have two lines full of scoring threats.

Kevin O'Donnell
Dover, Penn.

The Flyers' problems start at the top. Management hasn't looked at the calendar and realized it's a new millenium -- they still think it's the '70s. This team sorely lacks speed and puck-handling defensemen. While the latest drafts may have addressed this for the future, there are too many holes to fill for the Flyers to win in the playoffs this year. This team is built to win in the regular season, but I will be (pleasantly) surprised to see them get past the first round in 2003. Hitchcock is not enough.

Bob Podel
Phoenix

If these players really want to win a Cup, they better put aside their petty differences and play for Hitchcock, because he will not tolerate anything less than their best performance. Jeremy Roenick needs to forget that he didn't want to play for Hitchcock in Dallas and produce some goals.

George Balmos
Wichita Falls, Texas

Ken Hitchcock is exactly what this team needs: a swift, sure kick in the pants. ... My hope is that Hitch will get them to stop shuffling their feet, fingerpointing, and whining, and start playing like the potential champions that they are.

Sean McGuire
Tualatin, Ore.

The Flyers will still have a stong team heading into the new season, but they have taken a major step backward in becoming serious Cup contenders by not adding some free agent help.

Adam Nadler
Voorhees, N.J.

Ken Hitchcock will implement the system, provide leadership and give players their roles. Then it is up to the team to buy into the system and know what each player is responsible for and do their part.

Brian Stewart
West Lafayette, Ind.

Bob Clarke has done an excellent job at putting a team together at winning the Stanley Cup. The players just have to play.

Ryan Magee
Downingtown, Penn.

The Flyers did make some good moves this year, there is no question about that. But with the growing payroll and lack of results, the one obvious move was not made. The man who has been at the center of every bad season and every embarrassing moment in the press is still pulling the strings. Until the club realizes that (even though) he may have been a hero on the ice, Bob Clarke is no hero as a GM, then nothing will improve. Everyone says, just as you did, that "This may be Clarke's last shot." But I have to ask this, how many last shots does he really deserve?

Tim Hill
Atlanta

Mix one part ego (Roenick)... one part part crybaby (Cechmanek) ... three parts overworked superstar (LeClair, Recchi, Desjardins) ... and a dash of loudmouth thug (Brashear) ... stir with overpaid captain (Primeau) and presto: The Philadelphia Flyers.

Anders Larson
St. Paul, Minn.

The hiring of Hitchcock was a bad move. It is a known fact that he does not communicate well with his star players. Primeau, LeClair and Recchi will not be happy. Why does Bobby Clarke still have a job? He makes bad decisions, bad trades and the team always stumbles in the playoffs. Every year there is a new coach in Philly. I think they should start looking for a new GM, not a new coach.

Patrick Cavanaugh
Brooklyn, N.Y.

If the Flyers don't win the Cup this year, maybe Clarke should spend more time in front of the mirror instead of blaming the likes of Lindros, Barber and goaltending.

Tom Watt
Jacksonville, Fla.

(The Flyers) are very consistent and that's all one can ask for: They consistently find a way to lose, and find some coach or soap opera to blame it on.

Mark Yudell
Philadelphia

Eric Lindros = Headache. John LeClair = Backache. Not Winning the Stanley Cup = Absolutely Frustrating.

Anish Thomas
Philadelphia
