While the Islanders made the rest of the NHL stand up and take notice with their improvement in 2001-02, a first-round exit from the playoffs (albeit in seven hard-fought games) left fans wanting more. Did they do enough this offseason? We asked ESPN.com users what they thought of the Islanders' offseason moves and their chances in 2002-03. Here is a sampling of your responses:
The owners made the first step investing in star talent, the fans made the second step by supporting the team, and now it seems the organization has taken a step backward by being idle this offseason. ... Our suffering will continue, only this time more people will notice it.
Peter Cisario
The key to the rest of the offseason is to add depth on the wing. The Isles are just one good winger now from not just being a playoff contender, but being a Stanley Cup contender.
Jordan Moore
Mike Milbury's offseason moves this year are probably his best. He did not aggressively chase free agents at the back end of their careers. ... Build the team around Yashin, Peca, and the three veteran defenseman with young talent and watch the success the Islanders will have in the next few years.
Jotham Battista
(The) Isles need another scoring option to complement both Yashin and Parrish. With Czerkawski gone now, who else is gonna put points on the board? It's already been proven that when you take Yashin out of the picture, the Isles don't have much else.
Mike Cav
Amonte or not, the Isles have been moving in the right direction recently. They have the raw talent and potential to conquer the East right now.
Mike Jatczak
It will be tough without Peca, but these Islanders are for real. They have real talent and a real desire to win, as evidenced by the way they poured their hearts out during the Toronto series (which they should have won).
Danny Klugman
With the addition of Jason Weimer, the return of Radek Martinek on defense, and the emergence of Trent Hunter as a sniper on Yashin's wing, the Islanders should be right back, if not better, this season. Their defensive corps is better and younger than their cross-town rivals and they should finally get respect from the officiating during the upcoming campaign.
Jayson Denise
The Islanders' resurgance last season was a welcome sight to the Long Island faithful. However, their great gains last year could be forgotten in a heartbeat without a strong followup in the 2002-03 season. ... With Peca on the shelf until December, the grit of the team is diminished besides the presence of Steve Webb and Jason Blake. Scoring will be key, especially in the early games of the season. If the team comes out flat for the first two months without Peca, playoff hopes will be dim and the franchise will fall back into the "one-hit wonders" of the NHL, like the Sabres of 1999.
