Flames need more fuel for the fire

ESPN.com

Jarome Iglina
IGINLA
Being top-heavy is fine for Anna Nicole Smith, but in the NHL, it can throw a team out of whack. Last season's No. 1 trio of right wing Jarome Iginla (52), center Craig Conroy (27) and left wing Dean McAmmond (21) scored 100 of Calgary's 201 goals. They signed vet left wing Martin Gelinas and right wing Chuck Kobasew, their No. 1 pick in '01, but general manager Craig Button still hasn't found a second-line center. Without one, the six-year playoff drought will continue.

The Big Question

Q: Can Iggy get by without a little help from his friends?
It's going to be difficult, because the Flames really don't have much depth. Craig Conroy had a great year last year at center. Can he repeat that? They need more offensive output from Marc Savard. Derek Morris, their young defenseman, is really talented. If he's healthy, he'll help. He's missed some time because of contract holdouts and injuries. But it's doubtful they'll get much more production from their third and fourth lines. So it's going to be a struggle. Most of the production last year came from their first line. However, it becomes easier to defend when opponents know about it and study it. The third and fourth lines must produce, but they are major question marks. It's going to be tough for Calgary.
-- Brian Engblom

Good: Few teams have as many top-tier defensive prospects as Calgary, and fantasy owners should pay special attention to Derek Morris and rookie Jordan Leopold. Finally healthy, Morris should approach double-digit goals for the first time. Last year's Hobey Baker winner, Leopold should challenge for a prominent power-play role.

Bad: After scoring 65 points two seasons ago, Marc Savard tumbled to 33 points in 56 games last season. Unless the Flames decide to trade him, he'll likely center a second line of Martin Gelinas and prospect Chuck Kobesaw. That's not a recipe for recovery.
-- Eric Karabell

Top Prospect
Levente Szuper, G
A third-year goalie from Hungary, Szuper helped the Saint John Flames win the Calder Cup two years ago, and actually had better numbers last year even though Saint John missed the playoffs.

Minors Outlook
Saint John Flames
Veteran goaltender Kay Whitmore is gone, as is goal-less defenseman Burke Henry and ancient Rob Murray from last year's disappointing squad. Hobey Baker winner Jordan Leopold would help a lot, but is expected to be in Calgary for most of the season.

Forwards
How does a team with the league's reigning scoring champ rank 12th in the conference? Easy - after Jarome Iginla and linemates Dean McAmmond and Craig Conroy, there isn't much to brag about. Only two other players - Marc Savard and Chris Clark - reached double digits in goals and three of the team's top seven scorers were defensemen. Add to that the fact that McAmmond has been kept off the ice in camp because of back problems and the situation looks grim. The additions of Martin Gelinas from the Hurricanes and Chuck Kobasew, the Flames top pick (14th overall) in 2001, aren't enough to take the burden off last season's no shows. Western Conference Position Ranking: 12th
Defensemen
The Flames defense is young (Bob Boughner is the only player older than 25), but Derek Morris, 25, and Robyn Regehr, 22, have been living up to their potential. Unfortunately, the Flames need to focus on team defense more than the next guy because this unit can't do it along.

Western Conference Position Ranking: T6th
Goalie
Playing behind forwards who struggle to score and a collection of young mistake-prone defensemen, Roman Turek is relied on more in Calgary than he was in St. Louis. But as the team wore down, so did he, to the point where he declined an invitation to the Olympics because he needed a rest. Jamie McLennan, who was the odd man out in Minnesota last season, was brought in to serve as Turek's backup.
