Nasty game brings out boos from Isles fans

Associated Press

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- For the second time in three games at Nassau Coliseum, New York fans booed the Canadian national anthem -- drowning out the words -- before Game 6 between the Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday night.

In response, Maple Leafs president Ken Dryden sang "O Canada" aloud in the press box, following along with actress and singer Jamie Lynn Sigler, who stood singing on the ice.

Sigler, a Long Island native who stars in the HBO series "The Sopranos" as Meadow Soprano, also sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" to cheers.

In Game 3 on Long Island, fans booed "O Canada" mildly. In Game 4, no boos were heard. But after a nasty Game 5 in Toronto during which hits by Maple Leafs players left Islanders captain Michael Peca out 6-to-9 months with a torn knee ligament and defenseman Kenny Jonsson out with a concussion, New York fans took out their frustration on Canada's anthem.

The trend began at an NBA playoff game, when Detroit Pistons fans booed "O Canada" before Game 1 against the Toronto Raptors.

Since then, American and Canadian fans have booed each other's anthems in several other cities.
