Nedorost, Messier head to south Florida

Associated Press

SUNRISE, Fla. -- The Florida Panthers traded enforcer Peter Worrell to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday for Vaclav Nedorost and Eric Messier.

Colorado also gets a second-round pick in the 2004 draft.

Worrell, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound left wing, will help protect Colorado's recent free-agent signings Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. Worrell's 1,375 career penalty minutes rank second in Panthers franchise history.

He had two goals and three assists last season.

Worrell twice has been charged with driving under the influence, in 1998 and earlier this year.

Messier, who can play left wing or defense, had four goals and 10 assists in 72 games with the Avalanche last season, while Nedorost, a center, had four goals and five assists in 42 games.
